According to the developers, Battlefield 2042 won’t have rental servers or ranked modes at launch. The developers also confirmed that there won’t be an esports mode at launch either, though there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. The news dropped about a week after fans learned about Battlefield Portal, a game mode that mashes together a number of classic games from the series. While ranked modes and rental servers will be absent from Battlefield 2042, Battlefield Portal will give players access to a wide variety of historic Battlefield game modes, such as gun game or melee-only brawls.

In previous iterations of the Battlefield franchise, rental servers were a way for players to band together and continuously compete against one another. If a player or a group of players found a host they liked, they would stay with that rental server, usually building a community with the other players. Since Battlefield is a military shooter, players enjoyed banding together with teammates they knew and could trust. With Battlefield 2042 on the way, fans were ready to jump back into the actions with their Battlefield friends. Now that might be more difficult to do.

As reported by Wccftech, Battlefield 2042 will not feature a ranked or esports mode at launch, and rental servers will be absent from the game as well. In a Battlefield Nation interview, Ripple Effect Studios Senior Design Director Justin Wiebe confirmed the lack of features in Battlefield 2042 but claimed that the developers are ready to hear feedback from the community. “There’s no plan to have any kind of ranked or esport mode at launch,” Wiebe said. “This is something that obviously we want to hear more about from the community.” He said that if enough of the community wants those modes and features in Battlefield, the developers will consider adding them in.

Battlefield communities have almost always flocked toward rental servers, which could be kept online at all times, rather than custom games that are shut off when the host leaves. Without rental servers, it will be harder for Battlefield 2042 players to build strong communities that play over long periods of time. The absence of ranked and eSports modes is also disheartening to fans and strange from a publisher’s perspective. Esports and competitive FPS shooters are huge in the gaming industry right now and the popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

Also, without a ranked mode, players may be paired with skill levels that are too far above or below their own, making gameplay disengaging. Hardcore players won’t be able to push for that more intense experience, and gamers who want a more lighthearted Battlefield 2042 experience will get bogged down with try-hards. Perhaps if the community really wants those features and speaks loud enough, the developers will listen.
