Batwoman Season 2 Episode 17 Kane Kate Recap & Spoilers

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 2, Episode 17, “Kane, Kate,” which aired Sunday on The CW.

Now that Kate Kane’s back, what does that mean for Ryan Wilder? It’s a question that’s been hanging over Batwoman’s head ever since it confirmed Kate survived her horrific plane crash. At the same time, the show has become so grounded in Ryan’s perspective over the course of Season 2 (tackling issues of racial injustice and police brutality in powerful ways), it’s evident there’s no returning to the way things were, no matter how much the Bat-Team wants them to.

Season 2’s penultimate episode, “Kane, Kate,” offers an elegant if heartbreaking solution: Kate’s not really back. Following her offscreen pep talk with Safiyah at the end of “Rebirth,” Kate decides she would rather stay fake Circe Sionis. Honestly, it’s not even fair to call this Kate’s decision. After the trauma of her plane crash and being brainwashed by Enigma, it’s unclear how much agency this version of Kate truly has.

“Kane, Kate” begins by showing Kate back in her routine, buying drinks for others at her bar and being a smartass to Luke (he confesses he didn’t realize how much he missed that). He, Sophie and Mary are eager to speed along her recovery, giving Kate the meticulous journals she used to keep about her experiences fighting crime in Gotham. There’s even a scene of Kate joyriding around the city in her prized motorbike, once again in her element. As it turns out, however, it’s all a ruse. Kate hands the journals over to Roman Sionis/Black Mask, calling him “dad” and thanking him for “saving me from a life of Kate Kane.”

Batwoman Season 2 Episode 17 Kane Kate Recap & Spoilers

Unaware of the truth, Ryan has mixed feelings about Kate’s return from the dead. On the one hand, she’s already packing up her things and heading back to live in her van, insisting the Bat-suit — and everything that comes with it — belongs to Kate. “You made the suit your own,” Sophie tells her. “Just like you made Batwoman your own.” She’s right, but Ryan’s not about to deny Kate a second chance at life after Kate unknowingly gave her exactly that. Besides, she’s got bigger fish to fry before hanging up her Bat-cape. After Sophie reveals Black Mask is enlisting former Crows to work for him, Ryan infiltrates the Gotham Gazette to steal a laptop containing top-secret information about his illicit dealings in the hopes of stopping him for good.

Now aware of who she is, Black Mask has the Gotham City Police Department falsely arrest Ryan for distributing Snakebite. The pair exchange insults before Black Mask insists they’re the same: “We both wear masks to avenge the wrongs perpetrated against us.” Although Ryan doesn’t fall for that, she admits knowing the real Circe was assaulted and the Crows covered it up, tying off a loose narrative thread from “Rebirth.” She tries to appeal to his humanity by saying she understands his rage but using it to justify his actions is dishonoring his daughter’s memory. Of course, that’s not what Black Mask wants to hear, telling her he can’t have Ryan getting in his way.

Elsewhere, the Bat-Team learns what happened to Ryan and prepares to rescue her. Mary offers Kate her Bat-suit back in a would-be a touching moment that Kate ruins by shooting her and the others with darts before locking them in the Batcave’s elevator. She gives Sophie an extra kick in the gut, telling her how easy it was to lie when the latter revealed Kate’s old love letter to her. While all that’s happening, Ryan reveals her secret identity to her parole officer (who’s reasonably upset about the “Getting arrested for allegedly selling Snakebite” thing), begging her, “Now I need you to see me.” Thankfully she does, allowing Ryan to make short work of the corrupt officers guarding her holding cell.

Ryan quickly discovers Kate’s betrayal upon making her way to the Batcave and walking right into a fistfight with the former Scarlet Knight. Kate has the upper hand before the rest of the Bat-Team break free, but Sophie (understandably) isn’t ready to shoot her former lover, giving Kate the chance she needs to escape. Luke apologizes to Ryan, admitting they shouldn’t have rushed things with Kate and he just wanted her back too badly. For now, though, they’ve got other problems. As it turns out, Kate stole several super-villain weapons Batman confiscated and hid away in the Batcave over the years, including Joker’s acid flower, Clayface’s mud and Killer Croc’s tooth.

That’s not all she took, either. Early in the episode, it’s revealed Agent Tavaroff is among those who’ve turned to Black Mask in the wake of the Crows being dissolved. The entitled creep he is, Tavaroff insists he doesn’t want to be a cog in the super-criminal’s machine. Admiring his ambition, Black Mask eventually offers him what’s clearly Bane’s venom — a substance that promises to complete Tavaroff’s transformation into his comic book super-villain counterpart, Menace.

Finally, while all that is going down, Alice is reeling from Ocean’s death. She goes to scatter his ashes into Gotham River when she encounters her old pal Safiyah, who assures her they’re even after Safiyah had Ocean killed in retaliation for Alice burning all of her Desert Roses. Safiyah reveals her plans to rebuild Coryana by using a cutting from one of Poison Ivy’s vines, which Kate recovered for her from the Batcave as repayment for Tatiana killing the man who assaulted the real Circe. (Once again, Kate’s state of mind is complicated, to say the least.) Alice stabs her with the Desert Rose-infused knife and leaves her to suffer, saying killing her would be no fun in her oh-so Alice way. Before she does, though, Safiyah warns her a storm is coming to Gotham, setting the stage for an intense season finale.

Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton-Kane and Wallis Day as Kate Kane. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
