Ben Affleck Reveals Deathstroke on Justice League Set

The DC Extended Universe has had its fair share of bumps early on, but next year is when Warner Bros. Pictures is hoping that all changes. The studio will have Wonder Woman debut in the heat of the summer, before Justice League comes together near the end of the year. Not only will the movie feature the return of Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Henry Cavill as Superman, it will have the task of properly introducing The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) to round out the team.

While they will largely be dealing with the threat of Steppenwolf, it appears that won’t be the only team that the Justice League faces in their big screen debut. The cast is currently in the midst of filming Justice League and at this point, it did not seem like there were going to be that any more surprises revealed for a while. Well, if the latest tease by Ben Affleck is any indication, fans will be getting the first cinematic appearance by another DC Comics player.

Ben Affleck has shared a new video from the set of Justice League featuring none other than Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke. If you are unfamiliar with Deathstroke, he is a ruthless mercenary with enhanced abilities that make him one of the most dangerous characters in the DC universe. There have not yet been any reports that he could be making an appearance or rumors of someone getting cast in the role, but that has not stopped Affleck from sharing the following video:

As for the video itself, one interesting thing to note is where Deathsroke appears to be located. If you read Rob Keyes’ set visit report from Justice League, you may recall some details about the Flying Fox, the team’s transportation system and portable headquarters. The report details the lowest level of the Fox that features a ramp to board and exit the ship that also stores the Batmobile. If you can get past looking directly at Deathstroke, the Batmobile appears to be sitting behind him, with the rest of the setting looking like the inside of the hangar. Has Slade Wilson snuck onto the ship to foil the Justice League’s plans or has Batman gone to extreme measures to bring Steppenwolf down?

The decision to include Deathstroke in this movie is certainly an interesting choice, but the reveal that he is involved at this stage in the game seems to indicate that this is merely an introduction to the character for a larger role in future appearances. It is nearly impossible to pinpoint how he fits in to a story that has multiple hero introductions and a cosmic level threat that should hint to Darkseid; but again, this should not be a heavy role for the character. With this surprise announcement, Warner Bros has likely already been meeting with actors in secret about the role, which means an announcement could be on the horizon. In fact, do not be surprised if they turn back to Joe Manganiello, who reportedly tested for the role for Suicide Squad.

Should this only be an introductory appearance for Slade, he could also be up for a role in the solo Batman movie being developed by Affleck. Another possible explanation for Deathstroke’s addition here is that he’s being set up as the villain in a potential Suicide Squad sequel. The critical response may not be what WB had hoped for, but that film’s box office numbers have been strong and putting a primary antagonist such as Deathstroke in the sequel makes sense, especially considering they wanted him this first movie. Now it is up to Zack Snyder and company to give a proper introduction to the character to make audiences excited about his future in the DCEU.

Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters. Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman solo movie, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
