Best Horror Movies Where The Dog Doesnt Die

It turns out that not all dogs in horror movies go to heaven, but a lucky few managed to survive until the end credits. Man’s best friend has been a constant presence on movie screens going back to the earliest days of the silent film era. Four legged stars like Lassie and Rin-Tin-Tin were the stars of their own black and white serials during Hollywood’s golden age of the 1930’s and 1940’s, receiving top billing over their human co-stars, and the family friendly heroic dog genre continues to this very day. But dogs featured in horror films have been something quite different.

Dogs of the horror genre tended to fall into one of two categories. In many cases they were a victim. Who can forget the gut-wrenching death of the German Shepherd, Sam, in I Am Legend or the murder of Zowie in Pet Semetary II? In many horror films, dogs, and their deaths, serve as motivation for the film’s human characters and/or as an early harbinger of the horrors to come.

The other main role of dogs in horror films is to be the villain. Some of these examples include the rabies infected St. Bernard, Cujo, in Stephen King’s story, Cujo, the genetically engineered super guard dog, Max, in Man’s Best Friend as the villains of their stories, and their eventual deaths are inevitable. However, audiences frequently prefer seeing the dog to survive, and horror movies can even be harshly criticized for showing a dog’s violent death. Here are some of the best-case scenarios for man’s best friend in horror movies.

Chips was a stray discovered in the mall parking garage by a group of mall survivors in Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead and was adopted by Nicole (Lindy Booth). After discovering that the zombie hordes are seemingly uninterested in dog brains, Chips is later used to deliver a supplies to Andy, the owner of a gun shop across the road. This backfires when one zombie follows Chips through the door and infects Andy. Nicole tries to rescue Chips by crashing a truck through the store’s front window and is trapped. The rescue mission leads to several deaths, but somehow, against all odds, Chips makes it through. Chips is among the group of the survivors who make it through to the end and sets sail on a yacht to short-lived safety.

The Freeling family in 1982’s Poltergeist have a golden retriever called E. Buzz, which was named for E. Buzz Miller, one of Dan Aykroyd’s characters in the early years of Saturday Night Live. Mostly used for comedic effect, E. Buzz has a dramatic last minute dash into the family station wagon as the Freelings flee their supernaturally imploding home. A particular canine trope in horror films involves dogs being used to detect threats, such as Nanook in the The Lost Boys. As Edgar Frog says, “Your dog knows flesh eaters when he smells ’em.” Nanook gets a heroic moment in the film when he knocks a vampire into a bathtub filled with holy water.

But perhaps there is no horror movie dog luckier than Precious, the toy poodle owned by serial killer Jame “Buffalo Bill” Gumb in The Silence Of The Lambs. As Precious seems to be the only living thing that Buffalo Bill seems to truly love, most audiences would presume she’s safe. The visual of Bill instructing his latest victim, Catherine Martin, to “put the lotion in the basket” from the top of his basement well with Precious gently cradled in his arms reinforces this. However, it goes a step further when Catherine manages to lure Precious to the edge of the well and pull her down, using the dog as leverage to buy herself more time. After Bill is killed by FBI agent Clarice Starling, Precious is seen in Catherine’s arms as she is being tended to by paramedics.
