Best M4A1 Loadouts in Call of Duty Warzone

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has seen its fair share of trends come and go. Players have adapted to changes in the meta as updates to the game both buff & nerf different weapons. The M4A1 stood on a pedestal when Warzone first dropped into the community back in March. Unfortunately, it was the first to be hit with the nerf hammer. The MP5s and Grau 5.56s rose to powers, but soon suffered the same fate.

As the meta roller coaster continues, players find that resorting to old friends, such as the M4, offers a sense of comfort and confidence. This guide will dive into the finer mechanics of Call of Duty’s most popular gun, and examine three very different class set ups. These builds will be paired like fine wine as far as complimentary perks and secondary weapons are concerned. Of course, personal preference is always important, so players should take the following into consideration and adapt it to their play styles.

Optimizing the M4A1 in Call of Duty: Warzone

The image above displays the different recoil patterns for the M4’s underbarrel grips. The ‘control’ is an M4 with NO attachments. Keep in mind that the patterns in the white box are ALSO equipped with a monolithic suppressor and the 50 round magazine. Both of these attachments should be automatic when setting up ANY class in Call of Duty: Warzone. The silencer will conceal a player’s location when firing their weapon, and the extended magazine will make multi-enemy engagements much easier. (nobody likes dying mid-reload) Why the 50 round and not the 60 round? The 50 round mag is far less of a hindrance to ADS speed while the 60 is like strapping a brick onto one’s gun. Sure those extra 10 bullets may save one’s skin in a pinch, but speaking situationally, faster ADS takes priority.

The above patterns show that the M4 will ALWAYS kick up and to the right. Specifically, the first 20-25 shots will kick straight up, while the rest of the clip drifts to the right. Keeping that in mind, players can take advantage of the first half of their clip knowing it will only kick straight up. As far as tightest recoil pattern is concerned, the Merc grip is the clear winner. The first 25-30 shots kick up, the middle 10 seem to drift a bit before finally bunching together again for the final 10-15.

Players should also remember the difference between the vertical & horizontal fore-grips. Imagine one is holding the gun itself. The vertical grips are pulled down on therefor controlling vertical recoil. The horizontal grips are pulled side to side therefor controlling horizontal recoil. A long barrel gun will maintain its vertical recoil due to the weight of the barrel, the opposite is true for short barrels. That being said, lets dive into a few different class set ups for the M4A1 and how they can be paired with various secondaries.

Range Focused M4A1 in Call of Duty: Warzone

Verdansk is a huge map. Depending on how each circle closes, players may be forced into long-range open field engagements. The above set up optimizes the M4 for such occasions. In this situation, the staple attachments are the Monolithic Suppressor, the 50 Round Mag & the M16 Barrel. Circling back to the recoil patterns above, the Tactical offers a better initial spread in the first 30 shots. Since this set up is going for range, the weighted barrel compensates the vertical recoil on its own. As one can see from the graphic, only a slight compensation to the left will keep the first 40 shots on target. In this situation, the Tac Laser can be swapped out for a stock or grip tape, dependent on preference. The M16 Stock will bump one’s control while Stippled grip-tape will boost ADS just a bit. However, when it comes to long range engagements, minor differences in ADS don’t really play a factor.

This M4 set up is best paired with a short range submachine gun. Pairing it with a sniper rifle may work if the circle closes in an open area, but for moving around mid-game, players will want versatility. One can always pick up an enemy sniper rifle should the late-game call for it.

Perk wise, players should be sticking to picking up Overkill on their first Loadout and Ghost on their second (making sure to pick up their Overkill weapons). Otherwise, E.O.D or Cold Blood are recommended for blue perks. For yellow, each perk has viability. Strategize amongst squad members as to what everybody will run. The same can be said for lethal and tactical gear. This will remain true for the class set ups to follow.

Mobility Focused M4s in Call of Duty: Warzone

The counterpart to long range, of course, is close quarters. When the circle forces players into a building or any other narrow area, a mobile weapon might keep them out of the Gulag. Above are a pair of M4 set ups optimized for close quarters combat. On the left is an ADS focused set up while maintaining some sense of stability. The big staple here is the Predator Barrel which comes pre-equipped with a silencer. This frees up an attachment slot and allows for further customization. On the right is a Pure ADS set up. The key difference in the two are the stocks and underbarrels. Pure ADS is going to kick up like a sub-machine gun, so players will want to compensate for vertical recoil. The No Stock attachment also allows for lightning ADS. Players may opt for a different grip tape, however, the tac laser is going to offer the best sense of control over the weapon.

Examining the recoil patterns above, it is clear that Pure ADS is all over the place when it comes to control. Players will want to make sure they compensate, especially around halfway through the clip, for the North-East recoil pattern. If the slight difference in ADS isn’t a bother, players should opt for the more stable build of this gun.

Now effectively equipped with an M4 sub-machine gun, players will want to pair it with a long range weapon. Here is where a sniper rifle set to one’s overkill class will come in handy.

M4 Sniper Rifle in Call of Duty: Warzone

This set up may be a little tongue-in-cheek, but it certainly has its uses if paired with the right weapons and kill streaks. The staples here are the Variable Zoom scope and the SOCOM 10 Round Mag. The bullets pack a significant punch and can make for great suppressing fire on distant enemies. As seen in the recoil graphic, the M4 Sniper set up has a very tight recoil pattern. Of course, this is expected for a 10 round clip, but those bullets will shred through anybody unlucky enough to be on the receiving end. This weapon will require compensation for horizontal recoil, however the 10 round magazine doesn’t leave much to be argued between the different underbarrels.

Players will 100% want to pair this set up with a close range weapon. The 10 round mag will leave one reloading far more often than they comfortably should, so laying down those first punishing shots and then switching to a more mobile weapon is the only viable strategy here. If one can safely reload and reengage then they by all means should, but it’s far better to be safe than sorry.

Once again, personal preference is the end all be all when it comes to setting up one’s class in Call of Duty: Warzone. The above blueprints are meant to be just that. Players should tweak and modify to fit their needs, but don’t stray too far away from what’s been proven to work.
