Better Call Saul Star Surprised At Bob Odenkirk’s Quick Health Recovery

Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito was surprised at how quickly Bob Odenkirk recovered from his heart attack. The AMC show from co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould spun off from Breaking Bad in 2015 and has received critical acclaim throughout its five-season run. Season 6, which will close out the series, is scheduled to premiere in early 2022.

Better Call Saul explores the backstory of Odenkirk’s popular supporting character from its parent series, capturing his gradual transition from former-scam artist and aspiring lawyer Jimmy McGill to skeevy criminal attorney Saul Goodman. Though somewhat more subdued than its forebear, venturing less frequently into the violent world of the drug trade, the prequel series has gone on to become just as much of a critical darling, with some even arguing for it as the superior show. Viewers eagerly await Better Call Saul’s final season, but many feared the worst when news broke of Odenkirk collapsing on set from a heart attack, inspiring an outpouring of fans wishing him a speedy recovery.

Their wishes were granted to an extent that, and according to Metro.co.uk, surprised Odenkirk’s co-star Esposito. The Gustavo “Gus” Fring actor recalls the worry he and his castmates felt at their lead’s medical emergency, and is thankful that they were able to get him into treatment right away. That he rejoined them on set so quickly was a bit shocking, though:

Anytime you’re on set and you have a medical emergency, it just rocks your world, especially when you’re working with someone who has suffered that emergency. I’m really happy to say that Bob has an angel – we all have angels – but Bob is doing just fine and has really recovered quickly and he’s back shooting. … He’s in such great shape that we were all shocked!

Esposito says Odenkirk’s heart attack was as distressing to the Better Call Saul cast as it would have been if it had happened within their own families, and that the actor is “back shooting gently” on season 6. He also takes the opportunity to pitch a spin-off series focusing on Gus, the Los Pollos Hermanos co-founder and sociopathic drug kingpin, for when his current series reaches its conclusion. His concept, called Rise of Gus, would explore the character’s origins in greater detail, with only a few scenes from Breaking Bad having previously shown Gus’ dark history.

Esposito’s comments only further evidence Odenkirk’s glowing reputation, and fans surely share the actor’s joyful relief that the Better Call Saul star improved so quickly. The show had avoided shutting down production by focusing on scenes without Jimmy/Saul, but that could only have gone on for so long, and his return to shooting seems to have staved off any potential delay to season 6. After the show concludes, however, Esposito’s Fring-centered spin-off is worth considering, though fans may be split on the idea. Gus’ backstory would likely make for an interesting watch, but whereas Saul had viewers wanting to know more about him, part of the drug lord’s power as a character comes from his sense of mystery. Still, if Gilligan does decide to stay within the Breaking Bad universe for his next project, Gus would be a worthy headliner.
