Better Call Saul Theory Who Attacked Jimmy (& Why [SPOILER] Saved Him)

Jimmy McGill was attacked in the latest episode of Better Call Saul, but who was behind it and why did Mike Ehrmantraut save Jimmy? Now practicing law under the name Saul Goodman, Jimmy is taking on some truly unscrupulous clients, most recently one Lalo Salamanca. Representing the cartel member, Jimmy was able to get Lalo out on bail thanks to some classic Saul Goodman shenanigans (see: the obvious hired actors to play Lalo’s “family”), but his responsibilities didn’t end there. Lalo tasked Jimmy with picking up the $7 million in bail money, believing he’s the perfect guy for the job. Jimmy’s task was the focus of this week’s episode, “Bagman.”

Meeting the cousins in the middle of the desert to get the money sounds easy enough on-paper, but nothing’s that simple in the Breaking Bad universe. On his way back to Albuquerque, Jimmy was attacked by a group of mystery assailants and would have been killed in cold blood if it wasn’t for Mike coming in at the last minute to save him. By the time “Bagman” was over, many questions about the incident remained. Viewers don’t know who planned the attack on Jimmy, so we’re trying to figure out who it might be.

It isn’t a stretch to say Lalo ordered the hit on Jimmy. There wasn’t anything random about the attack; in the moment, it felt like a coordinated assault, with Jimmy’s aggressors knowing exactly where he’d be on the road with the money. Based on the episode, the only other person with that information (besides the twins) was Lalo, and it’s already been established Lalo continues to run business operations from his jail cell (see: his order for Nacho Varga to burn down Los Pollos Hermanos). After telling Jimmy where to go, Lalo might have set something else up, telling associates to eliminate the lawyer. Otherwise, it’d be a huge coincidence for the attackers to have such a good read on where Jimmy was. Normally, people hardly pay attention to Jimmy’s rundown car, but this time he was a target.

Better Call Saul Theory Who Attacked Jimmy (& Why [SPOILER] Saved Him)

Mike being Jimmy’s savior removes the possibility Gus Fring was behind the attack. Though Gus obviously has a long-standing feud with the Salamancas, he knows that if anything happens to Lalo north of the border, he will be blamed (as was said in last week’s “JMM.”). Remember, Mike gave Jimmy some information that would help him get Lalo out on bail; Gus wants Lalo free. It wouldn’t make sense for Gus to have Jimmy murdered and steal the bail money so Lalo rots away in jail. One can assume Mike and Gus didn’t know the full extent of what Jimmy was walking into, since Mike said he would have brought more guys with him if he had an idea. Gus most likely heard from Nacho (who’s working as something of a liaison between Gus and Lalo) that Jimmy was picking up Lalo’s bail money and told Mike to keep an eye on Jimmy from afar in case any trouble came about. Lalo could have been trying to frame Gus in a way to get a leg up in their ongoing battle.

As stated earlier, “Bagman” ends without everything resolved, meaning this is a thread that will be picked up in later episodes (only two remain in the season now). It’ll be interesting to see who was behind the attack on Jimmy and what their motivation was, as that’ll surely be a massive revelation with huge implications for Better Call Saul’s future. The spinoff is continuing to flesh out the mysterious history between Lalo and Jimmy, keeping viewers on their toes as it fills in the blanks. Perhaps the reason Jimmy is so terrified Lalo sent murderers after him is because it happened once before.
