10 Contestants Get Paid
While everyone knows about the prize money the contestants are competing to earn, many don’t realize this isn’t the only financial incentive in the show.
Contestants are paid a weekly stipend of about $1,000 for their time on the show, which includes pre-season isolation and their time in the jury house. This causes many contestants to have the goal of at least making it to jury so they can continue to collect cash. Returning houseguests and houseguests who are part of a specific twist can also earn some extra cash.
9 Recruits
While each season features a number of contestants who have applied to the show, many of them superfans who have been actively following the show for years, this isn’t always the case.

8 Watch One Season

7 Medical Clearance
Big Brother houseguests are vigorously screened. They are given extensive psychological and physical evaluations prior to entering the game. The contestants are also screened for STIs, likely because of all the hooking up that happens in the house.

These family members also need to sign release forms so that the houseguest can refer to them on the show. This becomes especially important when a houseguest wins HOH as they receive letters and pictures from their family. These family members may also be interviewed for segments on the show or displayed during a video message to the houseguests from home.
5 Music Wake-Up
Houseguests are not allowed to sing while in the house. This is because the show doesn’t own the rights to these songs and they would run into legal trouble if houseguests were singing them while the live feeds were running.
Each morning, the live feeds go down while the houseguests are woken up for the day. To wake them up, music is loudly blasted in the house. While this isn’t an ideal way to wake up, some houseguests are just happy to hear music as the only other chance they get to listen to music is the music provided to the HOH.
4 Fake House
The Big Brother house isn’t a house at all, it’s a set! The backyard is actually a parking lot decorated with fake grass. Many houseguests have shared that walking around barefoot in the backyard is a serious mistake as the ground is extremely hot.
Houseguests swear that the house looks much larger and more legit at home than it does when they are inside of it. The pool is smaller than expected and the ceiling is filled with bright television lights, making it pretty clear to the houseguests that they are living on a television set.
3 Getting Their Key
Each season begins with the houseguests getting their key to the house. Though many fans assume that these scenes are entirely staged, that isn’t the case. While the houseguests know they are going to be filmed, they are told that the crew is coming to film them as another stage of the casting process.
While filming, the crew distracts the houseguests and hides the key in their items. The houseguests are filmed saying goodbye before getting in the car and driving around the block. They are then brought back to say a private and final goodbye and are taken into sequester right away.
2 Outside Interference
Many BB fans have discovered the location of the set. This has led to several instances where people attempted to share outside information with the houseguests.
From shouting things over the fence to flying banners over the house, the houseguests have been forced into lockdown many times to maintain seclusion from the outside world. In Big Brother 2, a banner was flown over the house that rattled a houseguest as she believed it was a message from her husband about being hurt by her actions in the house.
1 Hotel Tryouts
One of the final stages of casting flies prospective contestants to a hotel. While there, they have a busy schedule with interviews, medical evaluations, and more.
Most interestingly, the prospective houseguests mingle with each other so that the casting team can see how they may interact with others in the house. It is rumored that some of the “prospective players” introducing themselves are actually members of the casting team posing as potential houseguests!
