9Over its 20+ year history on air, Big Brother has had a few spin-offs that have tried to capitalize on the main show’s success. Big Brother: Over the Top and Celebrity Big Brother took the show’s format and changed it in different ways. Over the Top is a CBS All Access exclusive in which everything is aired on the live feeds, competitions and all.

Celebrity Big Brother is, of course, the usual Big Brother format with celebrities. There are usually a few twists as well, and the season is a lot shorter. Today, we’re going to take a look at both of the series and decide which we would rather have another season of in the future.

10 Over The Top: All Of The Twists

One of the main draws of Big Brother: Over the Top is all of the twists. Because it’s not a part of the main show, the producers are able to experiment with the show’s format a bit, change things up. They can add all of the twists to the show that they’d like, they can break out of the usual constraints. This can make for some very fresh gameplay. This is also great because if a twist goes over very well, it can be implemented into the main series, which is never a bad time.

9 Celebrity: It’s Celebrities

Of course, the main draw of Celebrity Big Brother is that it’s full of celebrities. Sure, so far the series hasn’t pulled out any A-listers for the first two seasons, but usually, it’s a solid group of people that are there because they want to play the game. Celebrity Big Brother doesn’t necessarily change the format in very interesting ways, but adding celebrities to the mix is a ton of fun.

8 Over The Top: It Was So Fresh

Big Brother: Over the Top was a breath of fresh air for the series. It was filled with interesting competitors that wanted to be there, and the gameplay was solid. With so many back-to-back seasons of the same stale, everyone-votes-the-same-way gameplay in the main series, something about this spin-off was different. If anything can break up the monotony of Big Brother gameplay, it’s a good thing. Over the Top did just that.

7 Celebrity: Higher Profile Celebs

If Celebrity Big Brother were to enter its third season, perhaps the bar would be raised. Now that celebrities are seeing that the show is a success, maybe some higher profile people could join. No one is expecting a cast full of A-list celebrities, but one or two per season would be nice. Upping the roster caliber on Celebrity Big Brother would give it just the boost it needed to be that much better.

6 Over The Top: Diary Room & Competitions

Another one Over the Top’s defining features is that Diary Room sessions and competitions took place on the live feeds, fans got to see everything that went down.

This was so unique and interesting. How this hasn’t made its way to the main show makes absolutely no sense, but it gives all the more reason for Over the Top to return for another season for this reason alone.

5 Celebrity: Less Of A Commitment

One of Over the Top’s main detriments was the fact that it occurred so quickly after the main Big Brother season, and it was almost the same length. It was an investment after putting so much time into a full season of Big Brother. Celebrity Big Brother doesn’t ask that much of the viewer. It’s a pretty quick show that runs long after the main Big Brother season it follows ends. It’s just the right amount Big Brother right when fans are missing it the most.

4 Over The Top: More To Watch

At the same time, for incredibly dedicated fans of the show, Over the Top just keeps things going. Big Brother season practically never ends. It all comes down to preference on this one. Do you want a quick Big Brother jolt in the winter, or should it keep going after the main show’s series has ended? That’s up to you.

3 Celebrity: It’s On The Network

One benefit of Celebrity Big Brother is that it is on the CBS network, it’s not a CBS All Access Exclusive. If you don’t want to pay for CBS All Access, you don’t have to, the episodes are available to watch for free. This is certainly a nice benefit to consumers that Over the Top simply cannot compete with.

2 Over The Top: Fresh Faces

At the same time, one of Over the Top’s benefits over Celebrity is that it is full of fresh faces. New. exciting additions that are ready to get in there and play the game. Celebrities are nice, but they don’t have as much invested in the game as the players on Over the Top do.

1 Celebrity: It Keeps The Series Going

The reality of the situation is that Celebrity Big Brother is the best side-show for the series to invest in. Celebrity Big Brother pulls in numbers, and can bring new fans into the series. It’s smarter for CBS to invest in celebs for any spin-off they choose to follow, and that’s just what they’ll do.
