Big Mouth Season 6 Has The Perfect Cameo Setup

One of Big Mouth’s final jokes in season 5 hinted at the perfect cameo for season 6. Some have pointed out that the show’s wonderfully inappropriate Hormone Monster sounds an awful lot like Arrested Development star Will Arnett, though the character is actually voiced by series writer and creator Nick Kroll. Season 5 poked gentle fun at this fact, with the Hormone Monster joking in the finale that he is disappointed by this confusion, potentially hinting at a great cameo for Arnett down the road.

Kroll explains the nature of the show and its many hormonal monsters to his younger animated self, Nick Birch, in the overtly meta Big Mouth season 5 finale. After he imparts his lesson, the showrunner convenes with the Hormone Monster that he voices, humorously arguing over whether or not the character should be allowed to write jokes for himself. This sets up yet another meta joke. “Hold on, you voice me?” the Hormone Monster disappointedly asks his own actor, “Oh bummer, I thought I was Will Arnett.”

Though just a joke, Big Mouth’s creator Nick Kroll may have inadvertently set up a great cameo for the show’s next season. The hit Netflix animated series could feature a cameo from Will Arnett in Big Mouth season 6, either as himself or the Hormone Monster as a way of following up on this joke. As Big Mouth is in the Netflix adult animation camp, perhaps Arnett could even make an appearance as the titular protagonist in BoJack Horseman, another award-winning animated series produced by the streaming giant.

Later in the episode, after the Hormone Monster expresses his disappointment in not being voiced by Arnett, Kroll also let out a beleaguered sigh. He explains that, unfortunately, a lot of people think he’s voiced by Arnett, or at least doing an impression of him. Since the meta introduction of Kroll into the Big Mouth universe opens up a lot of doors for more fourth-wall-breaking jokes in the future, it’s possible the continuation of this joke could see The LEGO Batman Movie star appearing as himself, unanimated. Arnett could appear alongside Kroll, also expressing disdain at the confusion, or even offering to take up the mantle of the Hormone Monster, much to Kroll’s chagrin.

As noted, since Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman exist within the same Netflix adult animation sphere, perhaps Arnett could appear as BoJack himself. After Kroll’s discussion with the Hormone Monster regarding the voiceover confusion, Kroll suggests that maybe people mistake him for BoJack. The Hormone Monster shook his head, “No, nobody thinks that.” Kroll held his head in shame, defeatedly responding, “Yeah, I know.” This joke could be a great segue into an appearance from Kroll voicing BoJack, while Arnett’s cameo would take on the roles of Nick Birch and the Hormone Monster, furthering the confusion in a hilarious, offbeat way.

Never a show to shy away from being self-referential, Big Mouth’s latest fourth wall break also shows great potential for future cameos in the series. Arnett, as either himself, BoJack, or one of his other animated characters, would make a great addition to Big Mouth’s already colorful cast of characters. And, if Big Mouth was to go the BoJack route, the series could start to play with the idea of other Netflix animated characters making appearances in the “multiverse” down the road.
