Darkestville Castle Review A Funny Yet Illogical PointandClick Adventure

EPIC LLama’s very first attempt at a point-and-click adventure game, Darkestville Castle, doesn’t add anything new to the genre, but it is still a fun and rewarding experience. One would assume while playing that the developer has a lot of experience with the genre, as the game tells a funny story while providing players with a lot of interesting scenarios and puzzles to solve. Darkestville Castle doesn’t always work the way it was intended, but the enjoyable story and solid controls for the Nintendo Switch make up for any shortcomings the game has.

Players are put in the shoes of a demon named Cid who spends his days terrorizing the town of Darkestville. Most of Cid’s actions are nothing more than a nuisance to the town (skipping out on his bar tab or creating mutant chickens to roam the city streets), so most of the townsfolk have come to begrudgingly accept Cid as a citizen of Darkestville. One citizen, Dan Teapot, has grown tired of Cid’s antics and hires a group of demon hunters to bring him down. Dan winds up locked inside a cage in Cid’s castle and Cid’s beloved pet fish winds up being trapped by the demon hunters. Cid’s life becomes even more difficult from this as he accidentally releases a large group of other demons upon Darkestville, and must spend the rest of the game trying to undo his mistake.

The biggest selling point of Darkestville Castle is its humor, and players will quickly realize that Cid himself provides the majority of it. Cid is very witty and sarcastic, whereas most of the townsfolk are a little dumb. This means that most of his jokes are at the expense of the townsfolk around him, who are unaware that he is mocking them. Players will also be introduced to all kinds of hilarious characters along the way though like the hot dog stand salesman whose special sauce is made out of black ink, or the demon hunter who is terrified of a velociraptor that throws pies in people’s faces. In other words, the world of Darkestville Castle is insane and ridiculously hilarious all at once.

Darkestville Castle Review A Funny Yet Illogical PointandClick Adventure

Darkestville Castle is a very simple point-and-click game, so players will spend the majority of their time picking up objects and then deciding what character or object they can use their inventory on. It a very simple process where players just have to press a button to access their inventory and then select which item they would like to interact with. Players are also able to combine certain items together. For example, at one point players must fill a glass with water and then combine it with sleeping pills in order to make a character fall asleep. For the most part these simple mechanics work really well and it’s fun to figure out how certain items work in the environment.

The largest issue in Darkestville Castle is that some of the puzzles don’t have any logic behind them. It makes sense to use sleeping pills to knock a character out, but others are completely random. In order to receive ink from the hot dog salesman, he asks Cid to find the ingredients for his special sauce. Players will just have to guess what they are supposed to bring him, and the final answer makes very little sense at all, especially as the item is slightly hidden. Players will run into similar issues throughout Darkestville Castle’s run, and will mostly wind up just clicking on random objects to see what works.

Darkestville Castle isn’t reinventing the point-and-click adventure game by any stretch, but it manages to stick to the strengths of the genre and inject it with a hefty dose of humor. Cid’s comments throughout the game will have players rolling with laughter, even if some of the puzzles can be frustrating in their randomness. Those who are fans of point-and-click games should pick up Darkestville Castle whenever they get a chance, as long as they can ignore some of the puzzles that lack a bit of logic.
