Bill Murray Compares Ghostbusters Afterlife Proton Packs to Originals

Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Finn Wolfhard shares Bill Murray’s thoughts on the new movie’s proton packs compared to the ones in the original film. Old meets new in Jason Reitman’s upcoming Ghostbusters sequel as Murray and other original cast members return to pass on their ghostbusting legacy to a new generation.

Murray of course was somewhat of a surprise addition to Afterlife as the actor had previously expressed reluctance to return to the Ghostbusters universe. The first film obviously was a blockbuster that helped raise Murray’s star to new heights, but nevertheless he didn’t want to do Ghostbusters 2, and claims he was tricked into appearing in the film. Later when attempts were made to get Ghostbusters 3 off the ground, Murray was always the one who stood in the way of the film coming to fruition. Murray did agree to participate in 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot but his appearance was brief and unimpressive. Now he’s back as Peter Venkman once again, but it’s hard to say how happy Murray is about this development given his past reticence to revisit the role.

Though Murray always seems somewhat miserable to be involved in anything Ghostbusters related, it appears there was one thing he did like about being in Afterlife. In an appearance on Today, Afterlife star Wolfhard related Murray’s take on the Ghostbusters’ proton packs, which apparently have improved significantly since the original film (via CinemaBlend):

They’re like half the weight they were in 1984. Bill Murray actually came on set and lifted one of them up. Then like went up to Ivan Reitman, who’s the original director, and went, ‘Ivan, why didn’t we have proton packs this light?’ Like, why do they get the special treatment?

The original Ghostbusters certainly featured plenty of scenes where Murray and his castmates were forced to lug around those large and cumbersome 1984-vintage proton packs, so it makes sense that Murray would have bad memories about their weight. Thankfully those weight issues appear to no longer be a problem for Murray. Indeed, Murray has been decidedly positive about Ghostbusters: Afterlife in most of his comments, also enthusing memorably about the movie’s Mini Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men.

It’s indeed good to see Murray enjoying himself on a Ghostbusters movie after he was apparently not happy throughout the making of Ghostbusters 2 and spent years making sure Ghostbusters 3 never happened. Of course, whether the movie succeeds with a new generation of potential fans has little to do with Murray, and more to do with young stars like Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace. Ultimately, it’s the young Ghostbusters who will have to lug those proton packs into the future (if indeed the franchise has a future). Murray meanwhile can treat his appearance in Afterlife as one last victory lap, as it’s unlikely he will ever again return as Peter Venkman.

Naturally there are many older Ghostbusters fans who would prefer to have gotten a Ghostbusters 3 that reunited the original cast and did not include the generational hand-off of Afterlife, but obviously such a film became impossible to make when Harold Ramis passed away. All indications are that Ghostbusters: Afterlife does a fair job paying respect to those fans who are deeply nostalgic for the original movie, while also delivering a story younger fans might get into.
