Black Adam Teaser Trailer Breakdown: Origin, Powers & All Secrets Explained

Warner Bros. has just released a new teaser for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. Here’s a breakdown of all the featured secrets, powers, and Easter eggs.

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. Featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the dark ruler of Kahndaq, this new first-look sees Teth-Adam being freed from his imprisonment by the Council of Wizards. While he’s also a dark rival to Zachary Levi’s Shazam, Black Adam looks ready to shift the balance of power in DCEU and this teaser offers a dynamic look at his intense brutality.

As revealed by Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard in 2019’s Shazam!, Black Adam was the Council of Wizards’ first champion before Billy Batson. While he used to be a noble hero, Teth-Adam misused his powers for revenge when his family was killed, resulting in his inadvertent release of the monstrous Seven Deadly Sins. This lead to Adam’s imprisonment where he was given the name Black Adam, becoming entombed for five thousand years.

However, Black Adam will be freed as revealed by this new teaser trailer shown during DC’s FanDome 2021, and it’s clear that he’s still just as brutal and merciless as ever. Here’s a breakdown of the Black Adam teaser trailer featuring Black Adam’s powers, secrets, new characters, and Easter eggs.

1. Black Adam’s Prison Created By The Council Of Wizards

At the beginning of the teaser trailer for Black Adam, two explorers are seen entering a large cavern with a throne and ruins. Likewise, there seems to be an opening at the very top of the cavern resembling a lightning bolt. As such, this cavern looks to be the remains of Black Adam’s throne room in his kingdom of Kahndaq thousands of years prior which has become his prison, entombed by the Council of Wizards after Adam abused his powers and released the Seven Deadly Sins.

2. Sarah Shahi As Adrianna Tomaz, aka Isis

The Black Adam teaser also provides the first look at Sarah Shahi As Adrianna Tomaz, a.k.a. Isis, the wife of Black Adam in the comics. However, it appears as though her story will be altered for the DCEU. Rather than following her traditional arc where she was offered to Black Adam as a slave whom he freed and wed, it looks as though Adrianna will be one of the explorers to find and free Adam from his imprisonment. Seeing as how Tomaz eventually gains powers of her own from the amulet of the goddess Isis, it will be interesting if Shahi’s Tomaz will follow suit in the DCEU.

3. Marwan Kenzari As Sabbac

Furthermore, the teaser also provides the first look at Marwan Kenzari as Sabbac. While he appears as the second explorer alongside Shahi’s Adrianna Tomaz, the comics feature him as a dark mirror to Shazam and Black Adam, gaining his powers from the dark magic word “Sabbacc” instead of “Shazam.” Furthermore, it seems as though he could be set up as one of Black Adam’s villains, (if not the primary villain of the film). Sabbac should prove to be incredibly formidable, seeing as how his powers seen in DC Comics come not from the gods, but instead from the demons of Hell itself.

4. Black Adam’s Crown Of Kahndaq

Floating above the ruins of his throne appears to be Black Adam’s crown, an indication that there’s still deep power surrounding Black Adam’s tomb. It’s also a signifier that Adam is a ruler and seeker of justice, using whatever form it takes to get it no matter how brutal. That being said, the lines between Black Adam’s justice and revenge are blurred, hence his imprisonment beneath his throne and crown.

5. Black Adam Released With The Magic Word

It appears as though Tomaz carries a strong level of knowledge about Black Adam and the power of Shazam, seeing as how she’s able to read the texts featured in front of Adam’s throne. Furthermore, by speaking the magic word “Shazam,” Black Adam is released, though it’s unclear if that was Tomaz’s intention. Either way, she does look to be the one ultimately responsible for freeing the former ruler of Kahndaq in all his brutality.

6. Hooded Black Adam (DC Comics Callback)

Looking all sorts of intimidating, Black Adam is free once more in the teaser trailer while wearing a hood that blocks Dwayne Johnson’s full face from view. However, it’s an incredibly intense way to debut the former champion of the Council of Wizards. Likewise, it also serves as a callback to the comics New 52 reboot of Adam’s origins in 2011. In that story, Black Adam was freed by Dr. Sivanna and his return also had him wearing his menacing hood as a dark magical champion. While he probably won’t be wearing his hood for the entirety of the film, it’s a pretty dynamic way to mark his return.

7. Black Adam’s Devastating Lightning and Brutality

The teaser trailer for Black Adam also reveals that Tomaz and Sabbac aren’t alone. Men armed with guns are also seen in the cavern, though it’s unclear if they’re working with the explorers, mercenaries who followed them with their own agendas, or something else entirely (perhaps Intergang?). Either way, the first one to approach the kneeling Black Adam pays for it dearly, as Adam grabs him by the throat before his entire body and skeleton are burned to ash with his devastating lightning. Clearly, this is a dark and intense confirmation that Adam still has his powers and abilities despite his centuries-long imprisonment.

8. Black Adam Has Better Bullet Immunity Than Shazam

While the other soldiers/mercenaries open fire after Adam’s first kill, the former ruler of Kahndaq continues to display his power by catching one of the bullets between his fingers, an impressive show of his superhuman reflexes and speed. Not only that, but he allows the rest of the bullets fired to bounce off of him harmlessly just like Superman and Shazam. However, his ability to catch bullets as well shows that he’s had plenty of time to perfect his skills and power longer than 14-year old Billy Batson.

9. Black Adam Takes Flight

The final shot of the new Black Adam teaser trailer sees him lifting off from the ground and taking flight as the soldiers continue to shoot at him to no effect. It’s the perfect final shot, seeing Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam fully realized as a dark magical champion who no doubt has plans to reclaim what he lost due to his imprisonment by the Wizards. That being said, there’s plenty that the teaser didn’t reveal, such as the interactions Adam will have with the Justice Society of America’s Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), and more heroes. All in all, this new teaser trailer for Black Adam certainly succeeds in building up the excitement and hype for The Rock’s DCEU debut coming in 2022.
