Black Clover is taking a hiatus ahead of the story’s final arc.

As reported by Weekly Shonen Jump News – Unofficial, the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump confirms that the popular fantasy series will take a three-month hiatus to allow creator Yuki Tabata time to rest and prepare for the series’ last act. In a statement published in the magazine, Tabata confirms that the series’ next story arc will indeed be its last, and states that the creator originally did not want to take a break on the series, but Shonen Jump’s editorial team advised him to do so. Tabata says he will use the time to write the manuscripts for the manga’s remaining chapters. A return date for the series has not been announced, but the hiatus is expected to last three months.

Black Clover originally premiered in 2015. Set in a world where most people have some sort of magical ability, the series tells the story of Asta, a young orphan who was born without the ability to cast magic. Despite this, Asta still dreams of becoming the Wizard King, a title bestowed to the kingdom’s most powerful mage, and seeks to establish his place in the world by honing his physical strength and fighting abilities.

The series has been adaptated into animation by two different studios; the first anime, an original video animation (OVA) by Shaman King studio Xebec, was released in 2017. That stand-alone release was followed that same year by the premiere of a full-length TV series, which was produced by Pierrot, the same animation studio that created the anime adaptations of fellow Shonen Jump hits Naruto and Bleach. Pierrot’s anime series ran for 170 episodes over three seasons and concluded in March 2021. The anime’s story is set to continue with the release of the series’ first movie, which is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2023.

Tabata’s series has earned a dedicated fanbase, which notably includes Grammy Award-winning musician Megan Thee Stallion, and has been a commercial success with a worldwide circulation of more than 17 million copies. The series is also set to debut its first dedicated game, Black Clover Mobile, on iOS and Android devices later this year.

The entire Black Clover anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Tabata’s original manga is localized and distributed in English by VIZ Media.
