Black Knight Everything We Learned About Kit Harington’s Eternals Character

In Screen Rant’s set visit to Eternals, much was learned about what to expect from Dane Whitman, Kit Harington’s MCU character. In the comic books, Dane Whitman is the civilian alter ego of Black Knight, a hero who has a well-earned reputation as the greatest swordsman in the entire Marvel Universe. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was a mainstay of the Avengers and one of the group’s most important members.

Despite having only minor connections to the Eternals in Marvel Comics, the sword-wielding Avenger is set to make his MCU debut alongside the team in Phase 4’s Eternals movie. Played by Games of Thrones star Kit Harington, Black Knight has long been one of the upcoming movie’s biggest talking points, even though very little has been known about him up until this point. Though the Game of Thrones alum is billed as one of the stars, his character has had a limited presence in the trailers. Based on what’s been revealed from the marketing and set photos, it was no secret that Black Knight – Eternals’ only human main character – would be part of a love story with Gemma Chan’s Sersi, but little else has been confirmed by Marvel about his importance to the overarching story, or what future he may have in the MCU.

It’s understandable that the MCU’s take on Dane Whitman would be a big point of interest, especially since his comic book counterpart was once the face of the Avengers. With his rich comic history, Dane feels like a character Marvel could have big plans for in Phase 4 and beyond, especially with a young and talented actor of Harington’s caliber. Those plans are still being kept under wraps, but as Eternals’ November release date draws closer, more details are starting to drop. Quite a lot was said when Screen Rant paid a visit to the set at Pinewood Studios in January 2020. Here’s everything that Screen Rant learned about Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman in Marvel’s Eternals movie.

Dane Whitman Won’t Become Black Knight In Eternals

Black Knight Everything We Learned About Kit Harington’s Eternals Character

Dane’s plain-clothes look in Eternals marketing has led to the assumption that Marvel is hiding his Black Knight transformation, but Eternals producer Nate Moore confirmed that this isn’t the case. Moore said that Dane won’t be wearing a superhero costume, nor will he become the Black Knight. Moore later added to this by remarking that the Black Knight’s famed Ebony Blade won’t have a presence in the movie either. In Marvel comics, the Ebony Blade is at the very heart of Dane’s superhero journey. In fact, the Black Knight mantle is tied directly to the ancient weapon, which Dane inherited from his uncle. It was assumed by many that the Ebony Blade would be instrumental to Dane’s arc just like it is in the comics, but Moore’s comments make it clear that it won’t be around at all. Harington’s Dane Whitman may yet become the Black Knight, but it won’t be in this movie.

Black Knight’s Ancestors Won’t Be In Eternals

A common theory related to Black Knight is that Marvel would incorporate his complicated comic book lineage into Eternals. That would have made sense, given that Eternals spans over 7,000 years of MCU history. Theoretically, Eternals could have explored earlier versions of the Black Knight, such as Sir Percy of Scandia, Eobar Garrington, Nathan Garrett, or an entirely new character to lay out the legacy of Black Knight and the Ebony Blade. However, Moore has ruled out the possibility of a different Black Knight appearing in Eternals. Marvel could use one later if and when it decides to explore the Black Knight phase of Dane’s life, however.

Eternals’ Dane Whitman Will Have Comedic Elements

When discussing why Harington was cast as Black Knight, Moore cited his “comedic work” in 7 Days in Hell and his ability to “go dark” in Game of Thrones. According to him, the idea was for Harington to play “both sides of the character.” That’s indicative of a big change, considering that Black Knight was always a serious character in Avengers comics. He wouldn’t be the first major Marvel character to get a comedic update once in the MCU in order to make them more likable and interesting, however. Similar adjustments were made for Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) when they were adapted to the big screen.

Dane Whitman’s Romance With Sersi Explained

Moore elaborated on how romance fits into Eternals. Though Sersi has two love interests in Dane Whitman and Ikaris (Richard Madden), Moore doesn’t describe their relationship as a “love triangle,” because that gives the impression that the movie’s love story is “fraught and crazy.” Instead, Moore said that the idea was to give Sersi “options” via a character that was an important part of her life in the comics. With Dane, Sersi will experience a “sweet and sort of complicated” romance. Moore added that the Black Knight relationship in Eternals helps to show how Sersi has changed over the years and who she’s spending her time with in the present day versus the distant past, when she was romantically entangled with Ikaris.

How Dane Whitman’s Eternals Story Connects To Avengers Comics

The set visit also revealed that what Marvel has planned for Sersi and Black Knight in Eternals was inspired in some way by the Avengers comics from the early 1990s when both heroes were on the same team. Moore said that those stories are “relevant” to the movie, but didn’t explain that any further. In the comics, Black Knight had to be psychically bonded with Sersi to keep an Eternal disease called the Mahd Wy’ry from driving her insane. Since Moore remarked in the same interview that Angelina Jolie’s Thena will get infected with the Mahd Wy’ry, this aspect of their story is not expected to translate to the movie. Marvel is unlikely to take the same route with two different characters, so it could be that it’ll borrow other elements of their comic book romance.

Eternals Might Set Up Dane Whitman’s Black Knight Role

While Moore has maintained that Dane Whitman won’t become Black Knight at any point in Eternals, him eventually evolving into that character is something that the film will “play with down the road,” which leaves the door open for Black Knight Easter eggs, acknowledgment of his interest in swordsmanship, and perhaps some heroic qualities that would befit such a character. In other words, he won’t suit up as the black-clad swordsman, but the movie may still allude to or at least set up his MCU future. Eternals could very well lay the groundwork for him to get his hands on the Ebony Blade in a later movie or show.
