The first boss footage from the upcoming Black Myth: Wukong has been given an impressive 4K upgrade. The game was announced last month and coupled with the announcement was a gameplay trailer featuring the boss fight and plenty of other footage. As of now, there is no release date for game.
Black Myth: Wukong is being produced by the independent gaming studio Game Science and it will be based on the classic Chinese story of Journey to the West. The game is set to be the company’s most ambitious title to date. Its prior releases have mainly been free-to-play PC and mobile games.
YouTuber SnazzyAI took the boss battle segment from the 13-minute gameplay trailer that was released last month and upgraded it to 4K at 60 FPS. While the footage does not look as good as it could have been in native 4K, the upgrade does fix many of the quality issues that were present in the original 1080p footage. The battle shown pits the player against a giant wolf creature and showcases a variety of combat abilities from both fighters.
The direction of Black Myth: Wukong appears to be a third-person action game in the vein of Dark Souls. The core of the combat system revolves around timed dodges and attacks. However, unlike the Souls series, the player character in Black Myth: Wukong will be able to use a variety of special abilities that include shapeshifting and cloning. Another rumored departure from the Dark Souls formula is that the player will have to battle entire armies single-handedly. This does not necessarily lend itself to the methodical gameplay familiar to Souls veterans, but it does allude to changes that were not necessarily showcased in the demo.
The first footage from Black Myth: Wukong looks promising and it could easily find a home with the Dark Souls community. However, it also has enough new elements for it to not feel like a Souls clone. There could still be many changes made between now and the release of the game, as it is still in early stages of development, but the first signs are good. Game Science appears to be taking its first major release very seriously with the hope that the can prove itself capable of bigger projects than it’s ever taken on before. The demo illustrates that Game Science is putting a lot of time and effort into this game to make it stand out. Just from what was shown in the pre-alpha build, Black Myth: Wukong has the potential to be a massive title when it eventually launches.
