Black Widow Fans Just Uncovered The Weirdest MCU Continuity Error

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans spotted a glaring continuity issue in Black Widow, but there may be a reason for the apparent error. Black Widow finally reveals part of Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) backstory, showing she was part of a Russian spy operation in the United States as a child in the early ’90s. There, Romanoff posed as part of a fake family. Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) played her parents, and Yelena Belova (played later by Florence Pugh) portrayed her sister. Though the foursome had no blood relation, they all became a family. However, after the mission ended, the family split up, and Natasha and Yelena went into the Red Room program to become Black Widow assassins.

The fake family built a bond that has repercussions throughout the MCU. In Black Widow, Natasha reunites with Yelena, Melina, and Red Guardian to eventually take down the Red Room. She also covers for her former family when Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) and his troops show up after the Red Room’s destruction. Yelena then returns in Marvel’s Disney+ series Hawkeye. In a Black Widow post-credit scene, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) blames Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) for Romanoff’s death, and Yelena wants to make him pay. “I’m here to kill you, Clint Barton,” Yelena says in a Hawkeye episode 5 promo.

Black Widow includes an inexplicable continuity error, but there may be more to it. After Red Guardian steals SHIELD intel, the family quickly makes a run for it, and law enforcement is on their tail. But despite the haste, Yelena still manages to bring a My Little Pony toy. The problem is the toy shouldn’t exist. Natasha Romanoff’s Black Widow flashback took place in 1995, but the toy, which fans identified as a Twilight Sparkle doll from the series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, didn’t exist until the 2010s.

Though Black Widow’s toy error is small, it’s a surprising oversight. The film firmly begins in the ’90s, with the opening scene noting the year and a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” playing during the title sequence. However, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic didn’t premiere until 2010, a 15-year difference from Black Widow’s opening scene. Furthermore, Marvel is incredibly attentive to details, knowing fans watch its movies and shows frame-by-frame to spot Easter eggs and hidden references. So including a recent toy in a ’90s sequence seems like a significant MCU plot hole that Marvel wouldn’t allow. And though the character of Twilight Sparkle regularly learns about the magic of friendship, which could be a theme of Black Widow, the toy still doesn’t belong.

However, the MCU mistake may have another explanation. Though the toy seems like a continuity error, Tara Strong voices Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The actor regularly voices characters in superhero projects and even portrayed Miss Minutes in Loki. So, though the toy appears to be an egregious error, it could simply be a nod to one of the MCU’s actors. Of course, Marvel can now brush aside any continuity error it wants with its Multiverse; however, this apparent Black Widow goof might have a real explanation.
