Destiny 2 Developer Bungie Reportedly Planning BlizzardLike BungieCon

Reportedly, Destiny 2 developer Bungie intends to create its own BlizzCon-like event, hinted in a trademark filing for something called BungieCon. Though Bungie has focused the vast majority of its efforts in recent years on establishing Destiny as a tentpole IP, it’s not all the studio would have to show at a potential convention of its own design.

Late last year, company CEO Pete Parsons divulged Bungie has been working on multiple games for the last three years. A few of the group’s head honchos began incubation phases for new projects around 2017, Parsons said in an interview. Of course, he couldn’t offer any specifics, but the CEO did note that everyone’s thrilled about what’s currently in the works. When the public can expect to see an official reveal remains to be seen. However, it appears Bungie wants to eventually start delivering its future plans in big blowout events that are organized internally.

ResetEra user Turkoop recently spotted a trademark filing by Bungie, Inc. on Trademark247. According to the listing in question, the trademark was originally filed in July 2020 and specifically relates to “BungieCon.” The trademark’s description makes note of “jewelry instruction guides and reference guides in the fields of video games, science fiction, fantasy and action-adventure stories.” All in all, the focus centers on multimedia products such as costumes, shirts, board games, comics, and books. But the “BungieCon” name, specifically, indicates the studio’s interest in a BlizzCon-like convention.

At present, Bungie’s potential interest in the world of fan conventions may seem like a risky move, especially given the uncertainty of mass gatherings with coronavirus concerns still raging. But the future could be bright for an eventual Bungie-centric convention. Destiny alone would no doubt attract many fans to such an event. And if the studio is able to promise and deliver big news related to the franchise, players would likely find it all the more worthwhile.

Of course, the world of Destiny 2 continues to keep players returning for more. Bungie most notably rolled out next-gen patches for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S not too long ago, bringing true 4K gameplay to the experience for the new consoles. However, the wait for the eagerly-anticipated The Witch Queen expansion recently became longer due to its delay to an unspecified date in 2022.
