Dune 2 Why Villeneuve Should Continue The Saga As A Series

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Dune.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve needs to continue his reboot as a series. Currently, Villeneuve only has plans to make three Dune movies, which will be based on the first and second books in Frank Herbert’s original six-book sci-fi saga. Whether or not Villeneuve’s plans for Dune 3 will push through depends on the success of Dune 2, which will be released in theaters on October 20, 2023.

Villeneuve’s first Dune movie, which has been met with critical acclaim from both audiences and professional reviewers, covers approximately one-half of the first Dune book. In it, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, travels to the planet Arrakis at the behest of the Emperor, along with the rest of his family. There, he and his father set out to harvest the mythical substance spice, which not only grants unnatural prescient abilities but is also essential in space travel. Paul and his family are soon betrayed by their mortal enemies, the Harkonnens, who force him to flee to the desert. Here, he encounters the local Fremen people, before beginning to plot his revenge.

For now, Villeneuve is adamant about limiting his Dune reboot to a film trilogy. However, this greatly limits the scope of what Villeneuve’s Dune reboot could achieve. In order to do the best possible onscreen adaptation of the Dune saga, Villeneuve needs to go beyond his initial plans of a trilogy. The series format is simply much more conducive for fully fleshing out the extremely dense and complex world of Dune. Although 2021’s Dune has generally been praised more than it’s been criticized, there’s no question that it omits many of the key details that make the book so engaging. This will be much less of a problem if Villeneuve adapts the rest of the Dune saga using a format that’s not limited to two and a half hours. As shown by the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel series Frank Herbert’s Dune, the series format provides the space necessary to create a more faithful Dune adaptation. A limited series run on any streaming platform could allow Villeneuve to not just adapt Dune and Dune: Messiah, but expand his reboot to include Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune.

Moreover, as the director’s cut of Dune has been revealed to be 6 hours long, it’s clear that Villeneuve’s original vision includes more crucial and compelling details about Dune’s world and future. It’s understandable that, in the theatrical version, many of the book’s crucial details ended up on Villeneuve’s cutting room floor. Many of the missing scenes and concepts from the book involve long expository conversations, the minutiae of Imperial bureaucracy and life on Arrakis, and other such details that simply won’t fit inside the limited running time of mainstream cinema. But if Villeneuve continues Dune as a series, he could potentially settle all criticisms and create an adaptation truly worthy of Herbert’s masterpiece.

Dune 2’s success will determine whether or not Villeneuve will proceed to Dune 3, and if he will even consider turning the Dune saga into a series. Despite Villeneuve’s reservations with streaming, Dune’s stellar HBO Max performance speaks for itself, and its continued rise could help the director decide that an expansive Dune series is actually worth pursuing. The studio and HBO Max could even work out a deal that would show the series in theaters simultaneously with streaming releases. In any case, if Villeneuve does end up making a Dune series, it could forever change the way books and other literary works are adapted for the screen.
