Black Widow Is Natashas Life Flashing Before Her Eyes Endgame Theory Explained

One Marvel fan theory speculates that Black Widow is actually Natasha’s life flashing before her eyes as she falls from the cliff on Vormir in Avengers: Endgame. Natasha Romanoff’s sacrifice for the Soul Stone was a pivotal part of the MCU’s three-hour-long conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Fans were excited yet surprised to learn at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con that the recently deceased character would finally be afforded a solo film in MCU’s Phase 4.

Black Widow takes place in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and fills in events regarding Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) past with Russia and the Red Room. The movie introduces three new characters who were Natasha’s surrogate family for three years as Russian undercover agents in the United States. Reunited decades later, Natasha and her fake family must work together to free the Widows and destroy the Red Room, led by General Dreykov, who Natasha believed she eliminated with Clint Barton in Budapest years before.

Before the film’s release, fans speculated on a scene from one of the trailers where Natasha was holding the Red Dust, a gas that would free the Widows from the mind control of the Red Room. At the time, fans thought that the Red Dust could have been Pym Particles, and a Black Widow theory was born. The theory speculated that Black Widow traveled back in time as she fell from the cliff in Vormir to revisit important moments of her life– the period of her life between Civil War and Infinity War, per se.

Fans put together an elaborate theory based on the as of yet unknown Red Dust, thinking that Natasha went back in time as she fell to see her surrogate family one last time. In the past (where Natasha would get roped into helping her family on a mission), Natasha would have to find more Pym Particles to get back to the cliff of Vormir and fulfill the sacrifice to get the Soul Stone. Since the release of Black Widow, fans know that the mystery canisters were not Pym Particles, so the time travel theory doesn’t pan out, but that doesn’t mean that Natasha’s life didn’t flash before her eyes as she fell.

Black Widow fills in many of the lingering questions about Natasha Romanoff and her checkered past, but it also reveals that Natasha had two surrogate families in her lifetime. As Natasha fell from the cliff in Vormir, it was likely that she was thinking about all that she was sacrificing herself for. Clint and his family, the Avengers, and all those that had been snapped out of existence. Most likely Alexei (David Harbour), Melina (Rachel Weisz), and Yelena (Florence Pugh) as well. The events of Black Widow very well could have been on Nat’s mind since she reunited with her family after decades of separation. It’s clear that Natasha has tried to downplay the significance of those three years of being a fake family, but that they (especially her sister Yelena) were still very important to her. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether Alexei, Melina, or Yelena survived the snap. Since Natasha is so distraught about having lost all of her family in Avengers: Endgame, it’s possible she knew her sacrifice was a step in the right direction for saving both of her families.

Even though the release of the film negated Natasha’s time travel, life review theory, watching Marvel’s Black Widow with the idea that it could be Natasha’s life flashing before her eyes brings a new significance to the movie. For a character who spent much of her formative years alone, Natasha Romanoff ends up with multiple families for whom she ultimately gave her life to protect. It’s not so hard to imagine that in her final moments, she remembered her reunion with her first family in Black Widow and knew that her sacrifice would change the fate of the universe.
