Black Widow Why Red Guardian’s Captain America Lie Might Be True

Red Guardian claimed to have previously fought Captain America in Black Widow, and here’s why that lie might actually be true in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite being the first movie of the Marvel Studios’ Phase 4, Scarlett Johansson’s solo movie was set during the beginning of Phase 3. It focused on telling Natasha Romanoff’s story of finally taking down the Red Room, but it also introduced several new fan-favorite characters. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) played central roles as members of Black Widow’s family.

While Black Widow set up all these characters to have a future in the MCU, it also had to introduce each of them and provide their backstories. As a result, audiences saw Alexei Shostakov play Natasha’s father in America, break out of a Russian prison, and more. Red Guardian’s role also included multiple references to him fighting Captain America in the past. This caught the attention of fans and other Black Widow characters because that seemed impossible. Alexei claimed this happened during the 1980s, a time when Steve Rogers was still frozen in ice and incapable of such a fight. However, Red Guardian fully believes that he fought Captain America and snapped a man’s arm for questioning the authenticity of the story.

It might seem that Red Guardian lied about fighting Captain America to boost his own notoriety, but he could be telling the truth after all. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier established that there have been other super soldiers over the years and replacement Captain Americas. This came through Isaiah Bradley’s introduction, as he came from America’s attempt to recreate Erskine’s super soldier serum. Bradley was even sent on missions in secret. While Isaiah was detained at the time when Red Guardian’s supposed Captain America fight took place, his origin could’ve been replicated after as the United States kept trying to replace Steve Rogers. It is during these efforts that Red Guardian could’ve encountered a new Captain America who he just assumes is Steve Rogers.

As for what other versions of Captain America that Red Guardian may have fought, the comics introduced several different possibilities. People like William Burnside, Bob Russo, Roscoe Simons, Scar Turpin, and Jeffrey Mace all suited up as Captain America in the comics during the time he was either frozen in ice or otherwise left the mantle up for grabs. The MCU could reveal that any of these men became super soldiers during the 1980s. Agents of SHIELD previously introduced Jeffrey Mace, though, so he could be off the table of consideration if Marvel Studios has any interest of not retconning the series’ place in the MCU.

Marvel finding some way to confirm that Red Guardian fought a version of Captain America would be for the best. It means that Alexei isn’t delusional or a liar, and it gives the MCU another chance to expand the Captain America mythology. This would also be a smoother explanation based on what The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed than any of the theories about Red Guardian fighting a time-traveling Steve Rogers Captain America. With Red Guardian sure to return in a future MCU project after Black Widow, hopefully one of his next appearances can clarify how he managed to fight Captain America.
