Boba Fett Movie Never Had Logan Director Attached Says Lucasfilm President

As Star Wars fans await The Book of Boba Fett’s premiere on Disney+, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says that Logan director James Mangold was never attached to a Boba Fett solo movie. Ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, there have been many rumors regarding standalone films revolving around fan-favorite characters, from Yoda to, of course, the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Shortly before Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in theaters in 2018, reports of a Boba Fett film emerged with directors like Josh Trank (Chronicle) and Mangold attached.

Following Solo’s less-than disappointing performance at the box office and the sequel trilogy’s divisive reception, Disney/Lucasfilm’s focus shifted to TV projects, beginning with a Disney+ series focused on another bounty hunter in The Mandalorian. The series has since become perhaps the most beloved, new-age Star Wars project to date, paying homage to both the original trilogy, prequels, and animations. The Mandalorian even (finally) revealed that Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) survived Return of the Jedi’s Sarlacc pit and made him a standout supporting character in season 2. Then, the post-credits scene at the end of The Mandalorian season 2 promised a spinoff entitled The Book of Boba Fett set for a December 29, 2021 release on the streaming service.

Speaking with Empire Magazine (via Star Wars News Net), Kennedy opened up about previous attempts to resurrect Boba Fett. Lucasfilm’s president confirmed that Mangold was never actually attached to a Boba Fett movie and Trank’s film was scrapped early on in its development. Read what she had to say below:

“There really was virtually no previous development. We never got very far with Josh, quite frankly, because we never developed anything specific with him. And Jim Mangold never worked on a Boba Fett story.”

While Mangold never got to work with Lucasfilm on a Star Wars project, he’s directing the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, and fans are already more than satisfied with the studios’ small-screen take on the iconic bounty hunter. After being teased early on in The Mandalorian, Boba Fett made his triumphant return in “Chapter 14: The Tragedy,” regaining his family’s armor and epically combating an array of stormtroopers. The director of that episode, Robert Rodriguez, is helming several episodes of The Book of Boba Fett alongside Jon Favreau, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dave Filoni, Steph Green, and Kevin Tancharoen. As evident by the series’ trailer, it will see Boba fight for control of Jabba the Hutt’s old territory on Tatooine.

The Book of Boba Fett will further dive into the galactic underworld explored in an outing like The Mandalorian and Solo. As a crime boss, Boba will run his budding empire more respectfully than Jabba the Hutt, making the former bounty hunter the perfect anti-hero. Of course, the series will see Boba get into his fair share of fights, and it’ll be exciting to set what kind of set pieces The Book of Boba Fett has in store for audiences. If there’s one thing The Mandalorian proved, it’s that Lucasfilm doesn’t necessarily need the big screen to enamor audiences with a galaxy far, far away. And upcoming spinoffs like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett are set to give favorite characters well-earned solo outings.
