Why Beast Boy Is Titans Secret Weapon Against TWO Major Villains

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Titans season 3, episode 7, “51%.”

In Titans season 3, one of the team’s main antagonists is Jason Todd’s Red Hood, and it looks like once again, Beast Boy will be the Titans’ secret weapon. With season 3 introducing two new major villains in the forms of Red Hood (Curran Walters) and Scarecrow (Vincent Kartheiser), the Titans have faced off against four big foes. Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) was already instrumental in defeating Trigon, but why is he so often the key to the Titans’ victory?

At the beginning of Titans season 2, Trigon corrupts the minds of all the members of the team except Beast Boy (aka Gar Logan) and Raven (Teagan Croft). Rather than corrupting Beast Boy, Trigon has the rest of the team attack him, exploiting the connection between Raven and Beast Boy to leave Raven feeling abandoned and able to become corrupted herself. Beast Boy is able to transform into a snake to give himself enough strength to get up and snap Raven out of Trigon’s control, initiating the series of events that allow Raven to defeat Trigon.

Titans season 3, episode 7, “51%,” hammers home that Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and the rest of the team are accepting that Jason is now Red Hood and cannot be redeemed. Beast Boy, however, seems unconvinced and investigates Jason’s room alone, discovers a letter from Molly, Jason’s friend, and ends the episode by visiting Molly and saying that they both want to help Jason. This suggests that, while Hank failed to reach out to Jason, Beast Boy might be able to get through to him. In both of these cases, Beast Boy is demonstrating a character trait that none of the rest of the team have: the belief that no one is too far gone and beyond coming back.

In the initial Titans season 2 scene with Raven, Beast Boy has seen that once corrupted by Trigon, the whole team act completely out of character — they even beat him to the brink of death. He has no particular reason to believe that he would be able to get through to Raven, but he tries anyway. Many of the team are relative loners who focus on their own issues and rarely work as a united team: Dick often runs off to handle things by himself, Kory Anders (Anna Diop) is regularly distracted by problems related to Tamaran, Superboy (Joshua Orpin) is still working out his role in the world, etc. In comparison, Beast Boy is the emotional center of the team and the one most likely to seek out other Titans members to show them empathy.

It makes sense that a similar dynamic will play out with Jason Todd in the latter half of Titans season 3. Season 2 not only showed Beast Boy reaching out to Raven when she was struggling with her powers in a way that hurt him, but also showed him giving Jason a chance when Dick had shut him down and going with him to try and find Doctor Light. Beast Boy is the team member that Jason is closest to (with the possible exception of Rose Wilson, who has been absent from season 3) even if that relationship is antagonistic at times, as demonstrated by Beast Boy mimicking the way that Jason might mock him when he is searching his room. While Beast Boy might rarely receive support from the rest of the Titans, he always seems willing to give it so now all that is to be seen is whether the Titans season 3 finale shows him getting a better response from Jason Todd than Hank received.
