What To Expect When Visiting Googles First Retail Store In New York City

Google’s first physical store is opening its doors on June 17. Located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York, the new brick-and-mortar Google Store is the first permanent sale-and-experience spot for buyers of Google hardware after dabbling with the temporary pop-up store formula for the past few years. From the first glimpses that Google has offered, it is clear that the company is borrowing some of the minimalist glass-and-wood aesthetics of Apple Store locations across the US.

Google is promising a lot more of an intimate experience with its hardware portfolio at its physical storefront than what visitors would typically get at an Apple Store. Brought to life in collaboration with New York-based design house Reddymade, Google started with building a full-scale mockup of its physical store at its Mountain View campus. The search giant also claims to have paid special attention to the environmental aspect while building up its first retail store, which includes using energy-efficient lighting solutions to employing responsibly sourced wood and recycled carpeting.

Of course, the heart and soul of a physical store is the showcasing and hawking of products. Thus, a wide range of gadgets such as smartphones, audio wearables including the new Pixel Buds A-series earbuds, laptops, fitness bands, and smart home devices under the Google, Nest, and Fitbit brands will be up for grabs at the Chelsea store. There will also be a dedicated team on hand to help buyers with their queries and make the right purchase. Moreover, buyers will be able to pay for products at Google’s online store and pick it up from the new physical outlet. Besides selling products, Google will also be offering troubleshooting and on-site repair services at the store.

More Than Just A Place To Buy Google Products

Selling and servicing gadgets is only half the picture here, as Google aims to provide buyers with a real taste of how its products can prove to be useful during their day-to-day life by showcasing their abilities. To achieve this, the company has created dedicated experience zones called Sandboxes where its products can fully exhibit how they add value to users’ lives. Starting with smartphones, there’s a Pixel Sandbox with a custom lightbox where the camera prowess and tricks of Pixel smartphones can be tested in person. The Nest Sandbox is where buyers can experience gadgets like Google’s smart displays, thermostats, and smart speakers in a very home-like setup. There’s also a Nest Gallery Wall hosting 35 smart home products offered by Google in all possible color options, helping buyers pick the one that best suits the décor of their home. The Stadia Sandbox, on the other hand, will be all about showcasing the gaming chops of its cloud-based game streaming platform, much like an esports café.

The Google Store will also play host to a few artistic and tech-savvy installations. Transparent screens alongside the interior windows will highlight the latest Google hardware features, while a seventeen-foot-tall glass ‘Google Imagination Space’ structure with a rotating design will provide visitors with a taste of the company’s innovations, such as real-time translation in 24 languages. Overall, the new Google retail store will provide sales and repair services, but also serve as a showcase of how these products impact lives by offering a simulated home experience.
