Bob’s Burgers is all about a run-of-the-mill family with certain quirks trying to make things work. Bob and Linda are parents to three kids while keeping their marriage spicy and trying to run a family business. Let’s not forget that the Belcher kids all have their fair share of tween issues and childhood adventures.
The animated show also has relatable moments that fans can relate to. Sometimes arguments arise that can cause friction or separation. In some cases, separations are a bit on the trivial side like missing home during your first sleepover, but can also be heavier such as the death of a close companion. These separations hit home with rifts between a parent and their child or not being ready to move on.
10 Tina Valentine Breakup
In “V for Valentine-detta,” Jimmy and Tina once again break their peculiar relationship off. This separation counts as a breakup that had fans mad at Jimmy Jr. The breakup between the two characters hurt Tina more than anyone else. Jimmy happens to break it off with Tina before Valentine’s Day.
Tina spends her time wallowing in sadness and not wanting to socialize. To make matters worse, Jimmy Jr. uses the frame Tina gifted him for a picture of another girl. This separation was heartbreaking to witness as Tina deserved way better.
9 Gene & Ga-Ga Ball
Fans might not realize that Gene’s battle with the new game at school, Ga-Ga Ball, to be a separation but it is. This example is more of a social separation. When the game is introduced by Frond, it actually gains students’ attention. As Gene is left on the outskirts, the success of Ga-Ga ball has Gene feeling alone.
Tina and Louise no longer want to play with him and become too enthralled in the game. They even talk about it at home. It’s heartbreaking to see Gene feel so upset over everyone being brainwashed to like the game and having no autonomy over doing what he likes to do at recess.
8 Hawk & Chick
This example has nothing to do with the Belcher’s and focuses more on two guest characters, Shinji and his daughter Yuki. This separation really was emotional for fans as Shinji has a deep pain over losing his relationship with his daughter Yuki. The two were popular for portraying the movie characters Hawk and Chick.
After Shinji’s divorce, Yuki left with her mother to live in New York. Shinji hadn’t seen his daughter in 30 years. He was afraid that she didn’t want him in her life and had resentment over her childhood movie career. When Louise and Bob try to talk to her, she’s adamant that she wants no part of her past. In the end, she mends her relationship with Shinji.
7 Gene’s First Sleepover
A child’s first sleepover is a big deal and most look forward to their parents finally giving permission. In “Cheer Up, Sleepy Gene,” Gene’s friend, Alex, invites him over for his first sleepover. Gene isn’t that happy about it and is nervous, to say the least. This is Gene’s first time being separated from home and Linda.
Fans felt a bit heartbroken for Gene as he didn’t take to being in someone else’s house very well. He was tense and nervous about Alex’s family’s habits and not being able to sleep in his own bed. Gene even mentions being scared of not having his mom’s smell or her near him.
6 Louise & Her Bunny Ears
It’s not uncommon for young children to become emotionally and psychically attached to an item. Louise is notorious for always wearing her pink bunny ears. Fans have never seen Louise without them and her family hasn’t either. Louise’s attachment to her hat leads to heartbreaking separation in “Ear-sy Rider.”
The side character, Logan gives her a hard time and ends up taking her bunny ears. Louise goes into a downward spiral and starts acting out of character. It’s a bit upsetting to see how broken Louise became over losing something so dear to her and that was part of her identity. Fans were also upset at Logan’s behavior and for telling Louise that he threw them away.
5 Bob & The Pickle Vendor
Fans got to see a glimpse into Bob’s personal life when a close friend and vendor at the market passes away. The story is much more complex and heartbreaking. In “Mission Impos-slug-ble,” it’s revealed that Bob and Harry no longer talked to each other and separated after a debate at the market.
Bob told Harry his new pickle batch was too sweet leading to a fight. Bob is soon heartbroken when learning the news that Harry passed away and fears going to the funeral for being ridiculed by the others. At the funeral, Bob tries to give a eulogy but breaks down apologizing and saying how much he missed Harry. The funeral director throws a pickle at Bob as stated in Harry’s will and says, “Love you too, buddy.”
4 Tina & Linda At The Convention
Many parents fear the moment where their child starts to grow up and no longer wants to hang out with mom or dad. Linda chaperones Tina’s heroine convention trip in “The Grand Mama-pest Hotel.” It goes downhill for Linda as Tina separated from her to hang out with a cool new friend.
Tina no longer wants to stay in the same room or do activities with Linda. Linda starts to feel heartbroken over the possibility of Tina not wanting to spend time together and maybe even coming to resent her in a teen phase. It’s a classic example of her firstborn leaving the nest and becoming her own person, but Linda wasn’t ready for it. Linda has a moment of being a not-so-great mom.
3 Linda Works At The Grocery Store
Linda and Bob are highly relatable as a couple and have even had their fair share of arguments. Linda gets a part-time job at a local supermarket to help bring in more money in “Lindapendent Woman.” Having done so well at her new job, Linda feels underappreciated at the restaurant.
She and Bob soon have a big fight over it and Linda quits. This causes a rift and separation between them that was sad to see as Bob couldn’t admit how much he needed Linda. Linda even tries to showcase how better off she was at her new job, but in the end, reconciles with Bob.
2 Bob & Big Bob
Not much is really known about Bob’s family. Fans speculate that Bob’s mother passed away when he was young as they never see her and Bob only mentions her occasionally. Fans were saddened to see the immense separation and broken relationship Bob had with his father. It’s implied that Bob doesn’t visit him except for holidays.
Bob doesn’t want to deal with his father’s ridicule of owning his own restaurant and criticizing everything else. At their yearly visit to his father’s diner, Bob once again fights with his father. This time it’s bad as Big Bob leaves his own diner to go somewhere else. Bob is then riddled with guilt and apologizes.
1 Momma’s Boy
Gene has proved many times that he’s a die-hard ‘Momma’s Boy.” He and Linda do everything together, but Gene’s separation from Linda in “Mommy Boy” is too hard for him to handle. Gene and Linda reserve one day a week for a spa day to gossip, talk about their feelings, and wear face masks. Linda gets invited to join a women’s business group that cuts into their time together.
Gene tries to be supportive when Linda takes the opportunity, but can’t stomach it and gets possessive of Linda. Gene’s time away from his mom is a bit sad to see because of how attached he is. It’s more upsetting to see how Linda enjoys her new group but starts to feel guilty about taking time away from Gene.
