When Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart hit theaters in 2019, it was lauded as a breath of fresh air in the stale high school comedy genre. Wilde gave all the well-worn tropes of coming-of-age stories a makeover and got rid of all the problematic ones altogether. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever anchor the movie as one of the most convincing best friend pairings ever cast.

The funniest character in the movie is the seemingly invincible Gigi, played by Billie Lourd, who manages to be everywhere at once. But, while Gigi is Booksmart’s most hilarious character, the movie has a lot of them to offer.

The funniest thing about Gigi is that she’s totally unpredictable. In almost all of her on-screen appearances, she pops up unexpectedly, and her conversations can quickly devolve into yelling matches if someone says the wrong thing to her.

Technically, Amy’s parents Charmaine and Doug are two characters, but they always appear together and Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte hilariously bounce off each other.

Whether they’re hinting that they believe Amy and Molly are secretly dating or snuggling with their daughter’s “well-loved” panda stuffie, Charmaine and Doug always bring a ton of cringe humor to the table.

While Gigi’s on-screen appearances are reserved for laugh-out-loud moments, she’s more complex than she seems. When Molly speaks to Jared about Gigi, he rounds out her characterization.

He says, “She’s a sad person, you know? And yeah, she may be a little nuts, but she’s the most loyal person I’ve ever met. I mean, she once tried to shiv our mailman because she thought he laughed at me. Turns out, he wasn’t. He wasn’t laughing at me at all. He was just looking at a meme on his phone.”

Like all the most memorable supporting characters from comedies, Gigi steals every scene she’s in. Whenever she appears, the audience’s attention immediately turns to her.

It’s not easy to steal the spotlight from two lead actors who are as perfectly matched as Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, but Billie Lourd managed it.

3 Alternative: Amy

If it wasn’t for Gigi, the lead roles of Amy and Molly would easily be the funniest characters in the movie, and a lot of the biggest laughs come from the comic interplay between the well-matched stars. Thanks to Dever and Feldstein’s tangible friendship, scenes like “Who allowed you to be this beautiful?” are endlessly enjoyable.

Amy is the more awkward of the two. She even throws up on her partner during her first sexual encounter, which is about as humiliating as it gets.

The running joke with Gigi is that she’s somehow everywhere at once. After Amy and Molly see her jump off a boat into the ocean, she’s at the next party before them, completely dry.

Every time Gigi manages to defy physics to show up somewhere, the gag gets even funnier. Amy and Molly are more and more astounded by her invincibility every time.

In the opening act of Booksmart, Molly is horrified to discover that she forwent all the fun of high school for nothing because the popular kids who partied all year got into the same prestigious schools that she and Amy did.

So, Molly is determined to have one last night of fun before graduation, which leads the duo into all kinds of hysterical antics.
