Fans who are still waiting for news about the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel are going to have to wait a bit longer, according to series producer Eiji Aonuma. The very long-awaited sequel was announced at E3 last year with a cryptic and rather ominous trailer showing Link and Zelda venturing into the caverns beneath Hyrule Castle and awakening an ancient evil. After the overwhelming success of Breath of the Wild in 2017, fans are eager for a chance to revisit the breathtaking open world the game presented. Unfortunately, after the initial announcement, Nintendo went totally silent about the sequel, and hasn’t shared any more news.

The developer took the gaming world by surprise earlier today with a totally different announcement – Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This game is not the sequel fans have been waiting for; instead, it serves as a prequel, giving players a chance to explore the dreadful war that turned Hyrule into the ruined, shattered world Link explores in Breath of the Wild. Like Hyrule Warriors before it, Age of Calamity combines characters and environments from the Zelda franchise with the large-scale horde battles that Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors franchise is famous for. Unlike the previous Hyrule Warriors game, though, Age of Calamity is a canonical game; the trials that Link, Zelda, and the four Champions undergo in their doomed attempt to rescue Hyrule all actually happened in canon a century before Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is exciting news for a lot of fans, but it doesn’t come without some disappointment. In the game’s announcement from Nintendo, Eiji Aonuma took the stage to discuss the upcoming sequel. He took the time to thank fans for continuing to play Breath of the Wild and talked about the development team’s commitment to making the vibrant world from the first game worth exploring all over again. Unfortunately, this seems to be a very tall task indeed, because Aonuma says fans will have to wait “a bit longer” for updates about the game. Of course, he then immediately tempered the blow by announcing Age of Calamity, but that first piece of news is still pretty disappointing. Watch the announcement below.

Fans have been waiting a long, long time for news about the Breath of the Wild sequel. There’s still no indication of when the game will release; the first teaser stated simply that the game was in development. Thanks to Age of Calamity, it seems all but impossible that fans will get their hands on it by the end of 2020, and at this rate, it doesn’t seem too unlikely that the game won’t be seen till 2022.

It’s been a long, hard road for Zelda fans, and it’s pretty tragic to learn that there’s still no end in sight. Nintendo seems to have had some issues handling the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s not impossible that this development has slowed the sequel still further. Hopefully, when Aonuma said that sequel news would take a bit longer to arrive, he really meant it would just be a bit longer. With any luck, Nintendo seems to at least have some sort of timeline for letting fans know more about Breath of the Wild 2.
