Breath of the Wild Art Makes Link Doom Slayer Fantasy Come True

A discussion concerning weapon durability in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild inspired an artist to reimagine Link in Doom Slayer-style armor. Many consider Breath of the Wild’s weapon durability among its few flaws because of a tedious degradation system that results in weapons falling apart after a certain number of hits. The system proves especially problematic in the early hours of the open-world adventure, wherein combat tools breakdown following only a handful of attacks.

Though Breath of the Wild hit stores shelves well over four years ago, the discourse surrounding breakable weapons has yet to cease. The discussion reemerged as a hot topic earlier this summer, in fact, following Nintendo’s release of a brand-new trailer for BOTW2. Interestingly, those looking forward to the sequel seem torn. Much of the community seems in favor of the follow-up abandoning durability altogether; meanwhile, others, few though they may be, hope the next BOTW revisits weapon degradation and adds improvements to the formula. One online discussion took the conversation elsewhere, specifically pondering how protagonist Link is able to reduce his tools to nothingness at such an incredibly fast rate.

Recently, Reddit user and artist Laanuei_art shared fan art they created inspired by a discussion about why weapon degradation exists in Breath of the Wild. Commenters in an older Reddit thread posited that Link may harbor demigod-like super strength of some kind, which leads to heavy-handedness. Theories that such strength means he could also tear apart his enemies akin to Doom Slayer quickly took root. Before long, someone expressed the following: “Now I wanna see Link in Doom Slayer armor.” Laanuei_art brought this fantasy to life in a gorgeous piece of art, depicting Link donning Doom Slayer gear and standing in a pose reminiscent of DOOM 2016’s alternate box art. Check below for the fan art and inspirational DOOM image in question.

Instead of the Doom Slayer’s shotgun, Laanuei_art’s work sees an armored-up Link wielding the Master Sword with blue chainsaw chains wrapped around the blade. And the Imps of DOOM 2016 were cleverly replaced by the Bokoblin enemies from Breath of the Wild. This stunning piece of art deserves all that praise it’s receiving and then some.

Link won’t don Doom Slayer armor or come equipped with a retrofitted chainsaw-inspired Master Sword anytime soon, but the wait for BOTW’s sequel is slowly drawing to a close. Nintendo plans to launch the new entry in 2022, though specifics about the release window presently remain under wraps.
