Breath of the Wild’s Lost Zonai Tribe Civilization Explained

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s destroyed open-world gave the developers an opportunity to tell their audience the history of Hyrule through the environment itself, and perhaps one of the game’s most mysterious tales hidden within the plethora of ruins is the ancient Zonai tribe. This prehistoric clan has never appeared in any Zelda installment before Breath of the Wild, making their inclusion even more strange. Since the tribe is long extinct, the only way to learn about these people is to analyze what they had left behind thousands of years before the events of Link’s epic quest.

The Zonai are comparable to the real-world Aztec civilization in that they used largely primitive technology and weaponry but were highly advanced in terms of architecture and mathematics. Remains of their structures are littered throughout the land, such as the stone dragon near the Spring of Courage and the three gigantic maze-like labyrinths located in Akkala, Hebra, and the Gerudo Desert. It’s possible to tell which structures are created by the Zonai because the tribe has its own unique spiral symbol that they plaster on their work much like the eyes found on Sheikah technology.

The description of the barbarian armor set in Breath of the Wild, found within the aforementioned labyrinthian mazes, states that it “bolsters your fighting spirit and raises your attack power” and that it was worn by “an ancient warlike tribe from the Faron region”. Since the armor is discovered in the tribe’s most impressive pieces of architecture and the majority of the tribe’s structures and ruins are located in the Faron region, it’s very likely the warlike tribe mentioned in the armor set’s description would be the Zonai.

What Breath of the Wild Reveals About The Zonai

As the garb’s name implies, the outfit is very primitive and reminiscent of typical depictions of ancient tribes. The Zonai clearly idolized their fighting prowess to the highest degree in their culture, and many of their animal structures located throughout Faron may be further evidence of this. Some structures resemble pigs, which represent power, since Ganon and the triforce of power has always been associated with it.

However, their most prominent animal structure is the behemoth dragon by the Spring of Courage. It’s most likely a recreation of the lightning dragon Farosh who appears throughout the Faron region. Because of this association, the Zonai probably worshiped the dragon as a god of some sort. Ultimately, the history of the Zonai tribe is largely unknown and left to speculation since there is no living Zonai NPC to speak to in-game. However, the mystery of Breath of the Wild’s Zonai tribe might be covered in more detail in the upcoming Breath of the Wild 2.
