Brooklyn Nine-Nine has some of the best characters in all of television. They’re complex, relatable, hilarious, and overall just really likable.

Since debuting in 2014, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a workplace comedy that brings the funny in otherwise scary situations. Despite mostly all being police detectives, the characters have incredibly unique personalities, and all bring different qualities to the table in terms of what is needed most to be successful in their field.
The other great thing about this cast of characters is how their lives outside of work are showcased, making them more likable once viewers get to see them out of uniform. The personal relationships they form also give way to their strengths and weaknesses, and determine whether or not fans would want to be friends with them if they existed in real life.
10 Madeline Wuntch
Captain Holt’s decades-long rival with Madeline Wuntch was entertaining to watch, but seeing her take various punches at the beloved 99th precinct’s boss felt very personal at times.
Sometimes Wuntch’s rivalry with Holt went steps too far, like when she got him demoted at the end of Season 5. Even in death, she made her memorial Holt’s responsibility, continuing to torture him from beyond the grave.
9 Keith ‘The Vulture’ Pembroke
One of the Nine-Nine’s biggest rivals got his nickname ‘The Vulture’ for stealing cases out from under them time and time again.
He was a constant menace, even attempting to stop Jake and Amy from being together when he was the interim captain. If that wasn’t bad enough, he even tried to steal their wedding venue, proving to be a huge antagonist to the much loved Peraltiago relationship.
8 Roger Peralta
The root of all Jake’s daddy issues comes in the form of his father, Roger. He left his family when Jake was only 7 years old and has tried throughout the series to make amends with his son, with mixed results.
Roger isn’t totally unlikable because of his personality similarities to his son, making him goofy and charming in his own Peralta-way. However, he let Jake down one too many times throughout his life, something he’ll never be able to fully make up for.
7 Gina Linetti
Office assistant and Kwazy-Kupcakes player extraordinaire, Gina Linetti was the main source of humor in the precinct until she left in Season 6.
Her strong friendships with Jake and Holt made her a redeemable character, however, her treatment of Boyle (and the rest of her employees, for that matter) was sometimes more cruel than comical.
6 Charles Boyle
Devoted best friend to Jake and father to Nikolaj, Charles Boyle has the biggest heart of anyone in the 99th precinct.
However, his energy can be a little overwhelming at times, and his forceful nature when it comes to inserting himself into the personal lives of others (mainly Jake and Amy’s relationship) can be too much to handle. Still, he’s a loyal friend and would take a bullet for the ones he loves.
5 Jake Peralta
Lovable goofball detective Jake Peralta finds the funny in any situation, no matter how serious. His dedication to his job is admirable, as is his ability to create lasting relationships with his coworkers.
Jake’s downfall is that he can sometimes be incredibly immature and has a hard time taking things seriously. He uses humor as a defense mechanism and a way to conceal his true feelings, but his growth throughout the series proves that he has come a long way and finally turned into a somewhat responsible adult.
4 Amy Santiago
Always-organized Amy Santiago loves rules, organization, and Jake Peralta. A force to be reckoned with, Amy has always stayed true to herself, despite being teased and picked on by her peers for being a goody-goody.
Amy’s suck-up nature can be over-the-top, even to Captain Holt. She eventually learns to not care what other people think of her as much and instead focuses on doing what makes her happy. Her relationship with Jake brings out her more playful side, making her relatable and well-balanced.
3 Rosa Diaz
Axe-wielding Rosa Diaz takes no funny business from anyone and is always unintentionally hilarious.
Despite having a tough front, Rosa’s friendships with Jake and Amy prove that she has a softer side, and her strong bond with Captain Holt is one of the most wholesome on the show. Over the years Rosa has remained much of the same, which is great because she has continuously been at her best when she is her brutally honest self.
2 Terry Jeffords
Terry’s favorite things include yogurt, his three daughters, and a good pair of suspenders. He is a ray of sunshine who is always there to guide her coworkers on a path to success.
Terry’s positive and parental figure attitude makes him a bright spot in the Nine-Nine. He is there for his friends when they need him, knows his strengths and weaknesses, and is a family man at heart, making it impossible not to love him.
1 Raymond Holt
From his first day on the job, Captain Raymond Holt proved to be exactly what the Nine-Nine needed. His monotone delivery of everything, participation in the Halloween heists, and adoration of his corgi Cheddar made him a favorite among viewers and his employees.
Holt’s love for his job, his dog, his husband, and shirts with terrible puns on them make him the greatest character of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. No other captain would do the precinct justice, and no other has.
