Bruce Willis refused an invite to watch NASA launch their asteroid redirect mission. Willis starred as Harry Stamper in 1998’s Armageddon from director Michael Bay which focused on a similar mission in a fictional setting where a group of oil drillers were sent to take out an asteroid before it destroys Earth. Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton, Steve Buscemi, Will Patton, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Owen Wilson also starred in the film, which was a big hit for the summer of ’98, making $553 million globally.

NASA launched their DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission on November 23, which is a complex mission to intentionally crash a spacecraft into an asteroid in an effort to study the effects of the maneuver for future efforts to protect Earth from similar threats. Future ARM missions will attempt to redirect an asteroid into orbit around Earth’s moon where astronauts board the Orion spacecraft, the latest space exploration vehicle from NASA, which will explore the asteroid sometime in the mid-2020s. The DART spacecraft is not expected to make impact with its intended asteroid target until late 2022.

The first launch was a significant event and due to the similarities to Bay’s film, NASA reached out to invite Willis to attend because of his involvement in Armageddon. Willis, however, turned down the offer and no reason was given for the declination to attend. The invite was an intentional PR move, with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson saying, (It’s) something of a replay of the Bruce Willis’ movie, ‘Armageddon’, although that was totally fictional.”

In an interview, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the agency invited Bruce Willis to the launch of the asteroid redirect mission because of his role in “Armageddon.” Nelson said he’s not going but “we didn’t want to miss that connection.”

Willis is the star of a string of notable films of the last few decades, including the Die Hard franchise, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Sin City, Moonrise Kingdom, etc. The actor has opted for more direct-to-video fare in the last decade, remaining mostly absent from theatrical releases and starring in movies that require very limited involvement. The actor has at least ten similar low-budget films currently in the works.

While having Bruce Willis show up for an Armageddon-like NASA event is an interesting PR move, the significance isn’t lessened without him. The star has had a bit of a fall from grace in recent years, due largely to his lack of involvement in more prominent features, which is surprising given the amount of talent he’s worked with in the past, including Bay, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and M. Night Shyamalan. While there’s always talk of more sequels to some of his franchise work, including Die Hard and Sin City, the actor seems to be relishing his time outside of that kind of work at the moment, even if he still gets invites to major events like NASA launches.
