Buffy is Assembling Her Own Guardians Of The Multiverse

This article contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31.

Multiverses are all the rage – and now Buffy the Vampire Slayer is forming her own Guardians of the Multiverse made famous by Marvel’s What If…?. Technically Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a multiverse long before the MCU was even a twinkle in Kevin Feige’s eye, because the Slayer is the one who protects Earth from hideous extradimensional threats. But in 2021, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has embraced the multiverse as never before – explaining a major comic book reboot and even setting up the potential for a relaunch of the TV series, should that ever go anywhere.

Boom! Studios’ Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a relaunch of the Slayer’s story, with a new iteration of the iconic Slayer who’s living on an Earth rather like our own. The adventures have played out rather differently, though, with Buffy and the Scoobies learning the Hellmouth is a rift between an infinite number of realities – including alternate Earths, each of which has their own Slayer. Incredibly, a jaunt through the multiverse even saw them unexpectedly drop in on the Buffy TV show’s reality, dropping in and spying on their counterparts sometime during season 3. Unfortunately, the discovery of the multiverse has also introduced predators who threaten entire dimensions, and a lone Slayer isn’t going to be enough to defeat them.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31, by Jeremy Lambert, Marianna Ignazzi and Raul Angulo, sees Buffy begin to recruit her own Guardians of the Multiverse, granted without the efficiency of the Watcher in Marvel’s What If…? She and her Scoobies take to hopping through the timelines to recruit Slayers – and, of course, other Willows, whose power could be useful. It’s a time-consuming process, but the issue sees them put together a team of twelve who include:

Unfortunately, even a group of 12 Slayers may not be enough to deal with the Worldeater, a being who consumes entire dimensions – and claims he’s doing so for their own good, because he insists the multiverse is inherently stable, with dimensions constantly colliding. According to the Worldeater, the destruction he causes is preventing even more suffering in the long run – which sounds like the ultimate attempt at self-justification. The threat these Slayers and sorceresses are facing is greater than any they have faced before, potentially greater than any seen in other multiversal franchises too.

It’s amusing to note Buffy the Vampire-Slayer has picked up a trick from Marvel and DC Comics, numbering their universes (although the one the stars come from is simply called “the World without Shrimps,” an amusing nod to a dimension referenced in the original TV series). In fact, Universe-37 bears the same numeric reference as one of the alternate Earths in DC Comics, while Universe-12 has the same number as one of Marvel’s Earths. These are probably just coincidences – both comic book publishers have introduced so many different numbered dimensions the odds they’d have a reference were high – but they’re sure to amuse long-standing comic book readers who are also fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
