Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Destructible Environments Can Kill Players

Players have discovered that COD: Vanguard’s destructible environments can be quite deadly, especially for those who bring a knife to a rocket fight.

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Players are quickly learning that Call of Duty: Vanguard’s destructible environments can be deadly, particularly for anyone curious enough to melee attack live ammunition. Vanguard’s breakable environments count among the newest elements developer Sledgehammer Games introduced to the long-running first-person shooter franchise. The possibilities aren’t quite as extensive as those in, say, Battlefield, but the feature generally works as expected.

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, environmental destruction only appears in certain areas on any given map. Windows burst when shot at, wooden doors give way with melee attacks, and so on. Sometimes, such destruction leads to the unveiling of previously hidden passageways, which can prove useful under most circumstances. Many a Vanguard player agrees, however, that the shooter still feels a little light in terms of what is and is not breakable. Others, however, have discovered the hard way that destructibility in the latest Call of Duty entry isn’t nearly as cut and dry as it may seem at first glance.

CDL team Atlanta FaZe recently performed a few practice runs on the Tuscan map in Vanguard. One player gasped during the match, then quickly told their fellow teammates, “I knifed a Bazooka in the closet and it blew up.” Curious about how it all worked, another player – Arcitys – went looking for his own Bazooka closet. Upon finding one, he, too, knifed the World War II-era rocket and blew up in only a matter of moments. Apparently, environmental destruction in Call of Duty: Vanguard is nothing to play with. So there you have it, Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Tuscan map plays host to at least two different closets packing live ammunition. The why of it all remains unknown, of course, but users would do well to avoid randomly swiping their knives at in-game closets.

The newest Call of Duty installment hit store shelves approximately one month ago, inviting players to take another trip through a Sledgehammer Games-built World War II experience. Reception to the military shooter has been middling at best and sales, while still through the roof, seem at their lowest in years in some territories. It is possible post-launch support will turn the tide, with Vanguard’s Season 1 content scheduled to begin rolling out on December 9.
