Camryn Manheim Joins Law & Order Revival Replacing Original Star

Camryn Manheim has joined the cast of the upcoming Law & Order revival. Combining police procedural and legal drama, Law & Order was created by Dick Wolf. Since premiering on NBC in 1990, the series has grown into an entire franchise. However, the original show abruptly ended its run in 2010. At the time, the network made the decision to focus more on spinoffs such as Law & Order: Los Angeles and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Despite hopes that the series would find a home on a different channel, with TNT and AMC being considered at different points, negotiations for a Law & Order revival ultimately fell through.

Although there have been occasional discussions about bringing Law & Order back in the years since, the news was made official back in September that the procedural was returning for season 21. Behind the camera, Wolf will return as executive producer. Rick Eid, who has worked on Chicago P.D. and FBI, which take place in the same universe as Law & Order, will serve as showrunner. Although plot details on the revival remain slim, it is known that the series will pick up where the original Law & Order left off in terms of following the police who investigate crimes and the district attorneys who prosecute those put on trial.

Manheim, an Emmy-winning actress known best for her roles on The Practice and Ghost Whisperer, has joined Law & Order season 21. According to TVLine, she’ll be playing will play Lt. Kate Dixon and take over for Epatha Merkerson’s Lt. Anita Van Buren. Merkerson was unavailable to reprise her role as Van Buren because of her commitment as a series regular on Chicago Med, which is another Dick Wolf television drama. Manheim has more recently starred in series such as Person of Interest, Stumptown, and Big Shot, the latter of which streamed on Disney+.

Manheim joins other announced Law & Order revival cast members, including Jeffrey Donovan, known for his leading role in the Burn Notice series. Hugh Dancy, who starred on Hannibal, will recur as an Assistant District Attorney. In terms of returning actors, it’s been revealed that Anthony Anderson signed a one-year deal to reprise his portrayal of Detective Kevin Bernard. With all of Manheim’s television experience, particularly on The Practice, a legal drama that earned the actress a Best Supporting Actress award at the Emmys in 1999, she’ll bring a familiarity to the revival. Manheim has a history with the franchise as well, as the performer had her first guest role on the very first season of Law & Order. She would appear on the show two more times as different characters.

Perhaps, since Merkerson is still in the Dick Wolf universe, Lt. Van Buren will be able to make a guest appearance. Law & Order season 21 is slated to premiere on February 24, 2022 as part of a crossover event with both Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime. In an Instagram photo that’s since been deleted, an official set photo highlighted the actors filming their scenes and confirmed that production on the revival is underway. The photo showed Anderson and Donovan speaking to an unknown third character and, in another photo, sharing a laugh.
