Can Battlefield 2042 Weapon Bloom Be Fixed

Battlefield 2042 was met with a mixed launch, and with much of the criticism being lobbed toward the game’s weapon bloom, players wonder if this property can be fixed. New game modes, massive lobbies, and current-gen graphics are nice additions, but when players continually report that playing the game doesn’t feel good, it’s clear that a fix is needed. Fixing the bugs present at launch and addressing weapon bloom in a meaningful way is likely an advisable step in DICE showing players that it’s listening.

Weapon bloom is a property in many shooters that causes random bullet spread, with uses of bloom as recent as Call of Duty Vanguard. Weapon bloom is often used to simulate the inherent inaccuracy of certain guns, such as weapons that fire quickly and with lots of recoil. The semi-random spread gives the feeling of forces outside the player’s control – such as wind resistance, player movement, or the gun recoiling – are affecting the bullet’s travel. This is typically used in games to determine shotgun pellets spreading in unpredictable ways, and ensuring that high fire-rate weapons can’t be used accurately at long ranges to prevent being oppressive.

Battlefield 2042’s guns sometimes feel bad, and the bloom that applies to weapons seems largely to blame. The deviation these bullets tend to take almost seems to avoid the target at times, with bullets firing more so in the direction you’re looking, rather than the spot where you’re aiming. This feature can be aggravating for skilled and new players alike, as it punishes skilled players for lining up their shots and tracking enemies well with bullets flying at random trajectories and often missing, while new players will pick up bad habits as the random bullet spread may be netting them kills they haven’t exactly earned. Fixing this extreme deviation will go a long way in alleviating player complaints with the game.

Battlefield 2042 Needs Fixed Bullet Spread

Battlefield 2042’s general lack of polish has been clear from launch, and will need a complete overhaul to its bullet spread system, and one potential fix could be found with fixed bullet spread. With fixed bullet spread, weapon inaccuracies can still be present in-game, but in a way that allows for more input from the player. With fixed bullet spread, each gun would have a fixed pattern that bullets could potentially travel upon, with slight deviations rather than the current state of the seemingly random, wide bullet deviation. This allows for automatic weapons to more consistently land hits at short and medium range, while still preventing them from being oppressive at long ranges with the spread naturally growing wider the further the bullets travel, only allowing for a few long-range shots to make contact, rather than all of them, or as it is now, essentially none of them. A small list of Battlefield 2042’s weapons should probably have bullet deviation largely eliminated, such as slow-firing long-range weaponry like sniper rifles, as the point of these weapons is to reward player accuracy.

Between the server and netcode problems desynchronizing players, weapon bloom in its current state only exacerbates issues players are having in Battlefield 2042. Although bullet deviation while moving is nothing new in modern shooters, DICE may want to consider doing something to alleviate these issues soon, or risk alienating its player base. Until a potential fix, players will need to put up with Battlefield 2042’s bloom for the time being, with shooting while holding still currently the best way to stay accurate.
