Captain America Is More Vulnerable To Magneto Than Even Wolverine

As a mutant with a metal-laced skeleton, it makes sense that Magneto would make short work of Wolverine, yet the hero that he is beating most consistently as of late is Captain America. In various scenarios, the Master of Magnetism has shown that he is more likely to turn Steve Rogers’ shield against him than he is to mess with the metal in Logan’s body, a move that he seldom uses. This complete control of Captain America’s shield has led to multiple occasions where the X-Men villain has defeated Rogers with nothing more than a simple gesture of his hand.

Captain America’s shield in Marvel comics is stronger than the pure vibranium version of the MCU, as it is a metal alloy mixed with adamantium, the same substance that is bonded to Logan’s skeleton, along with one more unknown element. It is likely the latter two components that allow Magneto to affect the shield via magnetism. After many decades of battling one another and Magneto not showing an interest in commanding Rogers’ signature disc, he has increasingly used it in devastating attacks more and more lately.

One of the more recent and gruesome examples of how Magneto turns Captain America’s iconic weapon into a liability occurred in What If . . . AvX #4 by Jimmy Palmiotti, Jorge Molina, and Gerardo Sandoval. He catches the shield and vaporizes everything but the star, hurling the metal star back with such force that it cuts Steve Rogers and Iron Man in half. In a tamer example that nonetheless establishes Captain America’s lack of control, Magneto redirects his shield to hit Iron Man in Trial of Magneto #2 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, and Edgar Delgado. Another gruesome takedown involving Magneto’s mastery of Captain America’s shield occurs in Civil War: House of M #4 by Christos N. Gage, Andrea Divito, and Bruno Hang, when it is used to behead Bucky.

The decision to bring his shield into battle with Magneto is turning into a glaring strategic weakness from a typically masterful tactician. By simply controlling Captain America’s go-to weapon, Magneto renders Rogers’ enhanced reflexes and strength as a super-soldier meaningless. Though Wolverine’s entire skeleton is coated with metal, meaning Magneto could bring him to a dead stop if he wanted to, his ability to fight the X-Men’s arch-nemesis does not seem so limited. Wolverine has strategically picked his moments of attack rather than rushing in with a foolhardy battle decision, like throwing a shield that will just fall under Magneto’s control.

The X-Men villain doesn’t even always use Cap’s shield for evil. Magneto has wielded Captain America’s shield heroically against a zombified Captain America in the Marvel Zombies series by Robert Kirkman. The long-time consensus among comic fans was always that Wolverine was the least well-suited to battle Magneto, but Captain America has been proving to be even less of a challenge.
