Though it was late getting started, Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con kicked off with some big announcements. Michelle Pfeiffer is joining Ant-Man and The Wasp as Janet Van Dyne. New concept art for Captain Marvel was revealed — and we learned that the film will be set in the 1990s and feature the Skrulls. It will also include Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and his two working eyes!

That’s right, with Captain Marvel being set before the events of the first Iron Man, Nick Fury will not have yet lost the sight in his left eye. That means no eye-patch and no need for any extra time in the make-up chair for Jackson (plus, he’ll probably get a little of that de-aging movie magic Marvel has employed previously on Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Douglas). There’s also the potential for the incident which caused Fury to lose the use of his eye to be explained, possibly even tying it into the events of the film.

Setting Captain Marvel prior to much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could prove a game-changer, reinvigorating a franchise that by then will be 21 films deep. Not too mention introducing the Skrulls — aliens shapershifters who can change into practically anyone — brings in an interesting element, teasing the possibility that characters we’ve known for years and years could be revealed as being a Skrull in disguise all along. And in addition to Nick Fury, the 1990s setting could feature other characters from the MCU’s past: Howard Stark, Hank Pym, and even Peggy Carter, possibly providing some closure for her time with S.H.I.E.L.D.

With Avengers: Infinity War expected to upend the MCU in even more dramatic ways than Civil War did, we honestly know very little about where the franchise is going in Phase 4. Captain Marvel may, in fact, hold the answer, setting up not only Carol Danvers’s origin and transformation into the super-powered hero, but possibly laying the groundwork for the MCU to adapt the Skrull-centric story, Secret Invasion. It’d make sense for Nick Fury to there at the start of it all, too, what with his known trust issues being tied to his lost eye and Secret Invasion dealing so heavily with being unable to trust anyone out of fear they’re actually a Skrull invader.

It was last year in Hall H that we learned Brie Larson had been cast as Carol/Captain Marvel, and now this year we learn of the film’s setting, villain, and that a younger and fully-sighted Nick Fury will be joining in. Captain Marvel still has two years before its release, meaning that we’ve only just begun learning what Marvel has in store for the character and her film’s role in setting up the future of the MCU. What will next year’s presentation reveal?
