Warning: spoilers ahead for Catwoman #39!
With Batman away, Catwoman returns to Gotham City with big goals and gorgeous cover art from Jeff Dékal. Selina Kyle has been absent from Gotham City for a fair bit of time while leaping around Alleytown’s rooftops and alleys. However, now, Selina Kyle is feeling more ambitious, and has set her sights on the crime bosses of Gotham.
This change of pace for Selina comes as the creative team behind Catwoman gets a shakeup. It was announced last month that ongoing series writer Ram V would be leaving the series. Catwoman #39 will see the debut of new series writer Tini Howard as she shifts Catwoman’s goals back to her more Gotham-centric past. The issue will hit physical and digital retailers on January 18, 2022.
DC Comics has released the solicitation and cover art for Catwoman #39 by Tini Howard and Nico Leon, which features Catwoman holding Batman’s cowl. Obviously, the cover is symbolic of Catwoman’s return to Gotham, right as Batman is forced to leave his city, which was announced recently to occur after the events of DC’s Fear State. Although she isn’t going to be putting on the cowl and replacing Batman, Catwoman is going to take over part of his usual role in taking down crime bosses.

- Meow, Catwoman is bored of Alleytown and has returned to Gotham City proper for bigger fish to fry and to go back to doing what she does best…stealing crime boss secrets for blackmail and looking damn sexy while doing it, of course. New ongoing series writer Tini Howard makes her DCU series debut writing the cat of the night, placing Catwoman in her first blackmail heist disguised as a stripper at Gotham’s most secure underground club! Oh, Catwoman, hiding in plain sight in five-inch platform heels at a gathering of Gotham’s crime elite while surrounded by all the beautiful women and other shiny things to look at…what could possibly go wrong?
According to the solicitation, Catwoman will be stealing crime boss secrets for blackmail as she goes undercover. Recent stories have seen Catwoman declare herself the Queen of Alleytown, even as Simon Saint’s villainous Magistrate organization attempts to crack down on costumed crime. It’s not yet clear whether Selina will win or lose this important battle, but it seems that whatever happens, it will leave her ready to move on, fighting the good fight in the only way she knows how – heisting secrets and riches from the bad guys.
It will be exciting to see Catwoman return to Gotham as she steps up to take down organized crime while Batman is out of the picture. With a new Batman – Jace Fox – entering the picture, it’s possible Selina may have a new ally or adversary entering the picture, setting up a fascinating new dynamic. Indeed, new Batman series writer Joshua Williamson has teased that all of DC’s ongoing series are set to collide in the Infinite Frontier era. Catwoman’s new era begins with issue 39, coming January 18, and will see her taking on crime with Batman out of the picture.
