Celebrate the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker release anniversary with this hilarious ending reaction video. The Rise of Skywalker was the final chapter of the new Star Wars trilogy, originally released on December 20, 2019. Directed by JJ Abrams, the film starred Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, John Boyega as Finn, and brought back original trilogy stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine.

After a solid start with 2015’s The Force Awakens, also directed by Abrams, the new trilogy hit a snag with the second chapter, The Last Jedi, which divided audiences over how the story played out, as well as the fate of many of the characters, including Rey. She was often labeled a “Mary Sue,” a term used to describe a character that is “too perfect” and “without flaws” to the point of being boring. While fans have argued the point on both sides, The Rise of Skywalker continued that debate by revealing that she was the granddaughter of Palpatine, a twist that irked more fans than it excited. It became a source of contention for the new trilogy, which didn’t seem to have any true road map to where the story was going from the start.

This contention is demonstrated in a hilarious video (via williv) that captures an audience’s reaction to Rey taking the Skywalker name at the end of the film, a move that clearly felt unearned to these viewers. It’s staginess contributed to it being received with general disdain, which is on full display here, as people call the moment out long before it happens. The reaction was captured in a theater during The Rise of Skywalker’s original run, showing that many first-time viewers were none too pleased with the outcome. Take a look at the video below:

Since the release of The Rise of Skywalker, it was revealed that there never was a plan for who Rey would ultimately be or become when the series began. While Abrams had definitive ideas after The Force Awakens (and even a script that was never shot for the sequel), director Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi upended those by “revealing” that Rey was “nobody” – a poor girl abandoned by her parents on a desert planet who just so happens to have strong Force abilities. Fans were divided on that revelation, and The Rise of Skywalker sought to do a bit of retconning by giving her a strong Force bloodline, with the cherry-on-top being her taking the name of Skywalker.

For fans that liked the aspect of Rey being a non-Skywalker-related Jedi, her taking on the name meant that she was no longer a “nobody” and pushed against what some considered to be a fresh take on the normally bloodline-heavy Star Wars narrative. For others, the character of Rey simply never took hold and didn’t feel like she had earned the name of Skywalker by any stretch, making the whole moment feel like a hackneyed one. Either way, many Star Wars fans were none-too-impressed by the end of Rey’s journey in The Rise of Skywalker, which ended up being little more than a round-trip jaunt from desert planet to desert planet with little to show for it but a new name and a new lightsaber.
