Finding Wear OS Apps On The Play Store & Downloading Them Is Getting Easier

Google is in the process of making it much easier to find Wear OS smartwatch apps on the Play Store and, in turn, making it quicker to download them on a watch. This comes at a time when Google, with a little help from Samsung, is also in the process of reimagining what Wear OS is at the operating system level. Together, the goal is to offer users an improved wearable experience in the future.

In May, Google and Samsung announced they were teaming up to bring the best of their know-hows together and improve the experience for smartwatches running on the Android-powered platform. Over the years, Wear OS, formerly Android Wear, has expanded in terms of the number of devices it is running on, but the platform still appears to lack in adoption and especially when compared to the level Apple enjoys with its Apple Watch. With Samsung’s help, that might change in the future and starting with the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4.

In the meantime, Google recently announced it is adding more filters to make it easier to surface relevant watch-related apps when searching for “watch” or “watch faces.” In addition, the update post also explains that the Play Store will now start highlighting “curated clusters” of popular apps as recommendations when browsing. According to Google, the new app discovery improvements will begin rolling out to the Play Store in the coming weeks.

Quicker To Download Watch Apps As Well

Along with the improvements to finding apps, Google is also looking to make sure it is easier to download them with an option to remotely install them from the Play Store on other devices. Essentially, when the user finds an app, they will then be able to tap on the Install button and quickly see any wearable devices the app is compatible with before then confirming the download and sending the app to the device. In most cases, the Play Store will look to speed up the process even more by pre-selecting any compatible devices by default. Google also confirmed that the Play Store on smartwatches is also getting an upgrade in the looks department, with the new design drawing direct inspiration from Android’s Material You.

With the upcoming Wear OS changes coming, it makes sense that Google is also looking to make changes elsewhere to its smartwatch ecosystem. Although small changes on their own, the wider goal here looks to be improving the various different aspects related to owning and using an Android-powered smartwatch. Whether the sum of these changes are enough to help in Google and Samsung’s fight against the Apple Watch, that’s another question entirely.
