CES 2021 Turns AllDigital As Major Las Vegas Tech Event Cancelled

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced that the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will be completely digital, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although announced well in advance of the January event, this is not a surprise as many major events have been cancelled this year while others have opted for a digital format instead.

With coronavirus still at large in the US and no vaccine, social distancing remains the best defense against the virus. This has meant either cancellation or postponement of events that would have otherwise resulted in big gatherings, such as sports events, political party conventions and, obviously, tech conferences and trade shows. Trade shows and conferences are major annual events for tech companies, engineers, investors and journalists, and it is in these spaces where new products are launched, cutting-edge technologies discussed, and the future alluded to. In 2020, in-person events for Apple’s WWDC and Microsoft’s Build were canceled and held completely online. Although it does take some of the glitz off of these events, product launches and other interactive events largely went ahead as planned, thanks to the remote communication capabilities in use today.

The confirmation that a physical CES 2021 show won’t be happening and instead, the event will be held completely online, is unlikely to come as a major surprise to many. The CES press release explains that it is simply not possible to safely hold a mega event at Las Vegas, where the show usually takes place, with the risk of a virus outbreak looming. However, what is exciting is that by shifting to a digital format, more people are likely going to be able to participate in the event, which will take place between January 6 and 9, 2021.

CES Goes Digital & Hopefully Global

CES is one of the largest consumer electronics shows to happen each year in the US and what makes it different is that it is a exhibit platform for a range of consumer electronics, rather than simply an event showcasing computer or mobile electronics and technology. Therefore, while tech giants like Samsung, Apple and Microsoft will have a space, the limelight is usually stolen by automobile makers like Mercedes Benz, household electronics companies such as LG, and home entertainment brands like Sony. In short, everything from AI kitchen appliances and the latest virtual reality entertainment gadgets, to cutting-edge robotic tools and futuristic cars will be on display.

Last month, there was speculation that the popular electronics show would be going ahead as an in-person event. However, this is now not the case and the switch to digital will provide an opportunity for CES to re-imagine how the show is held. This not only includes new ways for exhibitors to connect with new audiences, but also how the event will be accessed and consumed by the general public overall. While the announcement might be disappointing for some tech enthusiasts, a digital event will undoubtedly make it possible for people from around the world to participate, and could even help to make CES even more of a global tech event.
