Warning: The following contains spoilers from Cheer Season 2, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix’s hit series Cheer is high on emotion, drama and death-defying stunts as it centers around an all-star cheerleading squad in the small town of Corsicana, Texas. Most fans insist that the reason for the show’s popularity is not necessarily the cheerleading, but the personalities of the cheerleaders from Navarro College and its rival Trinity Valley Community College.
Navarro College cheerleader Jerry Harris quickly captured attention with his outgoing personality and over-the-top “mat talk.” But Harris was noticeably absent from Cheer’s sophomore season after facing federal charges for child pornography after the release of Season 1 on Netflix. While Harris’s actions were inexcusable, many fans wondered if his legal troubles would affect Cheer moving forward. When Season 2 was released, audiences got the answer to that question when Jerry’s scandal was incorporated into the series.
Who is Jerry in Netflix’s Cheer?
Initially an alternate tumbler at the beginning of Cheer’s first season, Jerry became well-known for his exuberant “mat talk” in which he’d cheer on his teammates from the sidelines, oftentimes being the single loudest voice in the room. The “mat talk” became such a sensation that it earned Harris appearances on talk shows and meet and greets, with celebrities and fans alike clamoring for Harris to scream at them in the same hyper-aggressive, encouraging way.
However, he’d already established himself as a social media celebrity before the show. Jerry competed on various All-Star teams during Navarro’s off-season, and thanks to his appearances at these additional cheer meets and competitions, he was an established personality even before Cheer premiered. Unfortunately, he experienced one of the negative effects of celebrity status once news of his arrest came out and his federal charges were likewise all over the media.
The first episode of Cheer’s second season briefly touches on the shocking headlines following Jerry’s charges. The series then goes back in time to January 2020, eight months prior to his arrest. He’s seen in a few episodes, though he has noticeably much less screen time than he did in Season 1.
The weight of Jerry’s actions isn’t really palpable until Cheer dives head-first into the scandal in Season 2, Episode 5, appropriately called “Jerry.” An emotionally-charged episode told from the perspective of Harris’s victims, the installment is a sobering contrast to the high-energy routines that the show is known for. Cheer doesn’t shy away from Jerry’s actions, choosing instead to address the situation point-blank in a season that also discusses the effects of COVID-19 and other serious topics.
The Jerry Harris scandal is clearly the most severe. His deplorable actions towards two young cheerleaders are a clear smudge on Navarro and coach Monica Aldama’s legacy in the world of cheerleading. While there may never be an explanation for why he did what he did, Cheer’s second season shows the rippling impact Jerry’s actions had and will have on the team and the show for years to come.
Both seasons of Cheer are now streaming on Netflix.
