She has entertained fans for over 50 years with The Sonny and Cher Show, her unbelievable concert performances, and the many movies she has starred in. Most people forget that Cher is more than just a singer. She is also a talented actress who has been starring in movies for most of her career with her first film appearance without Sonny Bono in 1969 in Chasity.
Chasity was not received well by critics, which made Cher give up acting for over ten years. Luckily for fans, the iconic star made a film comeback in 1982. Cher has won Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and an Oscar for her acting roles. Here are Cher’s top 10 movies, ranked:
10 Mama Mia! Here We Go Again
Cher was fabulous in Mama Mia! Here We Go Again as the grandma of Sophie, Ruby. She looked stunning in platinum blonde and wowed fans with her performance of “Fernando.” Cher added sass and glitter to Mama Mia! Here We Go Again and is a natural at being a glamorous grandma.
But Mama Mia! Here We Go Again comes in 10th since she did not get as much screen time as fans would hope. Fans expectantly waited for Cher to appear, and it wasn’t until the end of the movie that she made her grand entrance, but a grand entrance it was.
9 Mermaids
Cher’s costumes in Mermaids alone are enough to gets fans to fall in love with the movie. But Mermaids is more than just a movie about beautiful 1950’s apparel. Cher plays Mrs. Rachel Flax, the adventure-loving and non-committal mother of two daughters, portrayed by Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci.
The small family of three is constantly moving from town to town until they finally settle down in Eastport, a small town in Massachusetts. It’s a touching and entertaining movie about family ties and the painful reality of growing up. Fans will fall in love with Cher in Mermaids as Mrs. Flax and wish she was their mother also so they could raid her closet.
8 Tea With Mussolini
Tea with Mussolini is an extravagant and touching film set in 1930’s Italy and during World War II. The plot centers around a boy, Luca, who was raised by a circle of British and American women, dubbed the Scorpioni.
The Scorpioni women teach Luca about art and many valuable life lessons. Cher plays Elsa Morganthal, a young rich Jewish American widow who is as glamorous as Cher herself. Cher shines as Elsa with her style and wit as Cher always does. Tea with Mussolini is a moving film about loyalty, the bonds of friendships, and the trials of war.
7 Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
Cher starred as Sissy in both the Broadway and film adaptation of Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, which helped her film career take off. Her performance as Sissy earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Bean, Jimmy Dean is about female friendships and the trials women have to go through by trying to fit into a man’s world. The film not only explores feminism but gender and sexuality. This was a risky film for its time, and the risk paid off.

The other two witches, Sukie and Jane, are played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon. When the women become suspicious of Daryl they devise a plan to get rid of him in the witchiest way. The film is an entertaining fantasy film that will have fans laughing and cheering for the three women.
3 Silkwood
With a cast of Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher, you know the movie will be phenomenal. In 1983 Cher co-starred in Silkwood, a film based on Karen Silkwood, who was a labor union activist and spoke out about the dangers of working with nuclear power.
Cher played Dolly Pelliker, Karen Silkwood’s lesbian roommate, and also a labor union activist. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Fans fall in love with the couple as their affection for each other begins to grow. There are many reasons to watch this award-winning film, and one of the main reasons is seeing Cher look absolutely stunning as Loretta and Ronny attend the Opera.
