With fans still processing the impending arrival of the new Dexter: New Blood season, there’s renewed hope for rewriting the mess that the final season of Dexter had been in 2013. Even after eight years, fans of the show are still holding a grudge about where the titular character ended up, and how his conclusion as a lumberjack living in the middle of nowhere made no sense.

While the new season looks promising, netizens on Reddit have discussed the things that they wish would’ve been different on season 8 of the serial killer’s journey and how it could have been much better.

8 Hannah’s Arc Should’ve Been Less Prominent

Some fans were of the opinion that the final season was less about everyone’s favorite serial killer, and more about his killer love interest Hannah. In Dexter, The stakes became about Hannah escaping to Argentina, and Dexter was also rallying for her to make it out, which could have been toned down since she was a character who came in season 7 and was not audiences’ main concern.

The_piemaker said “my biggest annoyance was with the fact that most of the tension was coming from the fear of Hannah being caught. Not Dexter… The show is called Dexter. The show is all about Dexter. How was the final season not completely about Dexter? He was a sidelined character in his own show.”

7 Dexter Should Have Died

It seemed as if season 7 and 8 had set up Dexter with a slew of consequences that he was about to face for all of his actions in the seasons before, but there wasn’t a lot of follow through for that setup, which is one of many reasons why Dexter season 8 is considered the worst. To many, the only way a final season for Dexter could be justified was if he paid for his sins, and many fans thought a fitting end for him was death.

Falcon_4287 felt the same “I read somewhere that the vast majority of Dexter viewers actually wanted Dexter to die at the end, which I have to completely agree with.”

6 Debra’s Death Was Handled Nonsensically

Many Dexter-heads hate that their beloved Debra had to die, especially since the shot seemed non-fatal, and that turning into a stroke seemed like a stretch. The fact that Dexter was able to unhook her life support, carry her body out of the hospital and go unnoticed is just unbelievable to them. They also felt her “burial” at sea with his other victims was insulting.

Dexterbinge111 ranted “You thought Deb’s death was handled well? An apparently non-life threatening gun shot leading to a stroke convenient for the rushed, sloppy ending is what I saw. Then, to add onto all of the absurdity, Dexter is somehow able to carry her off to his boat without anyone noticing and speeding off into some bad CGI. It was bad.”

5 Dexter Should Not Have Left Harrison With Hannah

Hannah was a widely disliked character, and she was still a serial killer. Dexter was a caring father despite his dark tendencies, so it did not sit well with viewers that he would leave his beloved son in the care of a woman that dangerous. She could have been a good mother to Harrison, but there was no way of knowing that since her life had been a melee of bad decisions.

Roaptuned said “The ONLY part of the ending I absolutely hated was Dexter allowing to take Harrison with her. His father is a serial killer and the woman he’ll consider his mom is one too. Not a very promising future.”

4 Miami Metro Should Have Caught On To Dexter

As an offshoot of Dexter paying for all the murder he committed, some viewers wish that the Miami Metro, the very police department that was like his family and that he surreptitiously stole cases from, should have caught on to their compadre’s nightly activities.

According to JMM123, it would’ve been a more high octane season, with higher stakes and tougher decisions for the anti-hero — “If anything, it would be better for Dexter. It would put him in a position where he has to make complex moral choices about running and/or killing those closest to him.”

3 The Exile Was Uncharacteristic

While fans understood Dexter’s sentiment when he disappeared from Miami, which was that he didn’t want to taint any more lives than he already had, the lumberjack angle was just so surprising and off that it upset many viewers greatly. A lot of fans would have definitely chosen a different ending.

ZombyWoof1992 put it succinctly “The whole part about him randomly being in exile as a lumberjack seemed out of nowhere and it probably would’ve worked just as well if they’d left that scene out and the last scene was Hannah walking off with Harrison. I mean no one expected a happy ending, but I don’t think anyone thought THIS is what we’d get.”

2 Dexter Confesses

The ending of Dexter was not going to be a happy one, realistically, as darker shows like Dexter tend not to end on a positive note. A dramatic way to end it would be if the serial killer confessed to his crimes and let the police do what they must at that point.

Mascox14 imagined that Dexter “Makes a video of himself and explains all of the murders he did for all the years. Him being Ice Truck Killer’s brother. Him framing Doakes for being BHB. Him taking the cases from Miami Metro and all the other things he did.”

1 Debra Should Have Put Dexter Down

There is a faction that thinks the show could have ended in season 7 once Debra had discovered Dexter was a serial killer. In fact, they think it could have been poetic that she would have let her morals take over and killed Dex.

TuriGuiliano said “I’ll believe from this point on that Season 7 ended with Debra killing Dexter in the shipping crate then crying over his dead body.” That certainly would have been an interesting turn of events at least.
