Jay and Silent Bob are back in Clerks III, the third and final entry in Kevin Smith’s beloved View Askewniverse franchise. The writer-director shared a new look at the threequel on social media, teasing Jay and Silent Bob’s possible new business venture.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Smith revealed that he’s completed the first cut of Clerks III, which wrapped filming just a few weeks ago. The accompanying image features Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) loitering in front of the Quick Stop’s neighboring store RST Video, which has been rebranded RST THC. Presumably a pot dispensary of sorts, it seems Jay and Silent Bob graduated from selling marijuana in front of a convenience store to becoming legitimate business owners. Silent Bob also appears to be holding a VCR in the image, hinting that RST THC is still offering VHS rentals and the lovable stoners haven’t quite embraced the digital era.

Describing the movie as both “funny as fuck” and “incredibly emotional,” the filmmaker went on to praise the performances of the film’s stars – including Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson, the leads of the original 1994 cult classic. According to Smith, O’Halloran and Anderson not only give “career-best performances” in any of his movies, but “two of the best performances I’ve ever seen in any movie in my entire life.”

Smith further noted that he hopes to show the film’s distributor, Lionsgate, the first cut on Friday before holding screenings for friends and family. “I’m elated to report the film is everything I always dreamed it could be, ever since the ending of Clerks II!” added the director, who went on to call Clerks III his “finest film to date.”

O’Halloran and Anderson reprised their roles as Dante and Randal in 2006’s Clerks II, which also featured franchise newcomers Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman – both of whom are returning for the third film. The sequel changed settings from the Quick Stop to fictional fast-food chain Mooby’s, but the third film will return to the New Jersey convenience store where it all began.

Smith previously revealed that the plot of Clerks III was inspired by the real-life heart attack that nearly killed him back in 2018. The threequel will center on Randal convincing Dante to make a movie based on their lives in an attempt to memorialize himself following a near-fatal heart attack. The duo’s project, a black-and-white movie titled Inconvenience, provides an opportunity for references to the original Clerks and the behind-the-scenes production of the low-budget indie.

Clerks III marks Smith’s latest return to the View Askewniverse, which he last visited in 2019 with the release of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

A release date for Clerks III has yet to be announced, but expect many updates from Smith between now and the time of the film’s debut.
