Clint Eastwood Inspired Rahul Kohli’s Character in Midnight Mass

Rahul Kohli reveals that American film icon Clint Eastwood was the inspiration for his Midnight Mass character, Sheriff Hassan. Midnight Mass, the new show from Mike Flanagan, dropped on Netflix recently, and the supernatural-tinged religious horror has got audiences talking. Like most of Flanagan’s work, the show’s story is widely regarded as a slow-burn, as well as a meditation on themes of grief, faith, and life. A powerful and intelligent horror, the show packs plenty of surprises, and Midnight Mass has been labelled a huge hit for Netflix. With a strong cast, gripping story, and excellent direction, Midnight Mass packs plenty into its seven-episode run, and marks another successful venture into the horror genre for its creator.

Mike Flanagan has been working as a writer and director since his directorial debut, Absentia, in 2011. Since then, he has written and directed a total of seven feature films, including Hush for Netflix, and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, starring Ewan McGregor. Flanagan first came to mainstream prominence in 2018, with the Netflix release of his acclaimed supernatural horror/drama The Haunting of Hill House, loosely based on the Shirley Jackson novel from 1959. The series became a huge hit for Netflix, and cemented Flanagan as one of the leading creative forces in modern horror. This was succeeded by a follow-up series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, with an entirely new story, but many of the same actors from The Haunting of Hill House return.

One of the actors to work with Flanagan on The Haunting of Bly Manor was Kohli, and the pair have teamed up once again for Midnight Mass. Speaking candidly in an interview with Men’s Health, the English actor talked about his weight gain for the role, and about becoming the Clint Eastwood of Midnight Mass. The 35-year-old discussed his attempts to gain weight “the bad way,” by piling on the pounds himself via a poor diet. He also talked about how his love of big screen legend Eastwood, and Eastwood’s character in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars” film trilogy, influenced his portrayal of Sheriff Hassan. Read Kohli’s comments below:

“I just was like eat crap, eat crap, eat crap. And we got there. It was the stupidest method acting nonsense I’ve ever done, where I put on all the kind of weight that the industry would be like ‘oooh look at him!,’ only to have to lose it all and hit the gym hard … My dad’s a big, big, big spaghetti western fan. And as a kid, I always wanted to be Clint Eastwood. Well, not Clint Eastwood—The Man with No Name. And I used Sheriff Hassan to kind of scratch that itch.”

Sheriff Hassan is a Muslim whose religion and beliefs are at odds with an island populated by Catholics, with the church and a charismatic preacher playing prevalent roles in the community. This makes the Sheriff something of an outcast on the island, allowing him to tap into Eastwood’s iconic “Man with No Name” role. What’s more, it makes the complexities of his job that much more difficult. Flanagan’s decision to place this religious and cultural difference center stage in Midnight Mass is just one of the many factors that makes the Netflix series such an interesting and unique show.

The positive reception to Midnight Mass has audiences looking forward to Flanagan’s next show, the upcoming The Midnight Club, and has also helped Kohli to further grow his career. The Londoner currently has two new projects in development, with Twilight of the Gods currently filming, and Career Opportunities in Murder & Mayhem in pre-production. Whether the Flanagan and Kohli will team up again for future projects remains unclear, especially as Kohli has previously revealed he hates horror movies. However, it seems that working with Flanagan has proved a special exception, and he is going all out to make the most of his dream playing his own version of Eastwood in Midnight Mass.
