Since the start of Cobra Kai, several characters from The Karate Kid returned in the spin-off show, with many of them changing since the 80s. Though Daniel LaRusso is still one of the main protagonists of Cobra Kai, his stardom and heroism do not necessarily replicate his glory from The Karate Kid franchise. Sometimes, even the most popular characters like Daniel will exhibit flaws, showing that they are not perfect human beings, after all.

Like Johnny Lawrence, Daniel LaRusso has also changed in these three decades as he now has a family and a successful business. However, there are aspects of Daniel that has not changed, especially regarding his karate skills and personality.

10 Changed After Karate Kid: Committed To A Relationship

Throughout The Karate Kid series, Daniel seemed to have a problem with holding a long-term relationship with his girlfriends. Ali Mills was gone by the second film, and when Daniel develops a relationship with Kumiko, that also instantly ended by the third film. Despite some bad experiences with ex-girlfriends, Daniel finally found the perfect person to live the rest of his life.

Daniel married Amanda LaRusso before the start of the Cobra Kai series. They had two kids, Sam and Anthony. Unfortunately, their marriage did stumble across problems as Daniel was more committed to karate rather than helping run the family business. Unlike his other relationships, Daniel fought for his troubled marriage, showing that he loves Amanda and is not ready to lose her.

When Daniel arrived in Reseda in 1984, his only family was his mother, Lucille LaRusso. He always respected her and would do anything to defend his family. He even develops a family-like relationship with Mr. Miyagi. This could be the Italian side of him that expresses his love for family and remaining loyal to them.

Now, as a parent, Daniel expanded his family and is even more loyal than ever. He even hired his cousin Louie to work at his dealership and allowed his mother to visit them at his new home. Most importantly, he still visits the grave of his former sensei as he still truly cares and misses longest friend and father figure.

Most older fans will remember Daniel as a teenager who had just recently moved to Reseda in a small apartment. He did not have the luxurious lifestyle that Johnny and Ali Mills had as teenagers, but that never really bothered Daniel as a teenager.

Of course, life took a drastic turn for Daniel as he started his auto dealership business. Not only was his business a success, but it has allowed his family to live a wealthy life. It has even given him more privileges, such as becoming a member of a clubhouse and trying to expand his business to other regions.

Daniel started his rivalry with Johnny after Daniel tried to defend Ali Mills from him at a beach hangout. Eventually, they settled their feud in karate, where Daniel came out as the victor. Unfortunately, Daniel saw that Johnny has not changed as he reopens Cobra Kai and teaches the ruthless methods of “Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.”

However, Daniel has an unforgivable beef with John Kreese, who tried to sabotage him and Mr. Miyagi in both the first and third films. Clearly, Daniel cannot trust Kreese as he would never change. However, seeing Kreese with Johnny only increases his dislike towards his childhood foe, which only makes his suspicions about them even more valid.

6 Changed After Karate Kid: Became Somewhat Of An Entitled Snob

There was a time that Daniel and his mother did not have a lot of money. They lived in Reseda, which is basically where most lower-income people lived. Also, his low socioeconomic status further made him a target by the then-rich kid, Johnny, and his Cobra Kai friends.

However, things changed in these last three decades for Daniel. He became a successful businessman, which meant more privileges and luxuries for him. Unfortunately, having so much money comes at a price in which Daniel started to become an entitled snob. He used his influence to sabotage Johnny by increasing the rent at the complex without realizing his actions would also hurt other local businesses. Most people will find that pretty insensitive of Daniel to do, and it only occurred due to his wealthy status.

5 Stayed The Same: Karate Is For Defense

Though Daniel has somewhat changed as a person, his love for karate holds the same since his teenage years. Even without the guidance of his former sensei Mr. Miyagi, he still holds his philosophies to heart about karate.

When Daniel does return to karate in the series, he is adamant about his only rule about karate, which is only for defense. He even shares these teachings with his new students.

4 Changed After Karate Kid: A Sensei and A Father

Most viewers will remember the time when Daniel was Mr. Miyagi’s protégé. Mr. Miyagi taught him everything he needed to know about karate and made sure that he does not lose his touch on the values and philosophies regarding it.

Eventually, Daniel became a master, which meant that he had completed most of the basic and advanced training. However, Daniel was going to take a different step in karate as a sensei. Not only has he been able to replicate much of the teachings and training of Mr. Miyagi under his new students, but he has also become a great father to his daughter and trainee Samantha. However, he also took the same steps as Mr. Miyagi by recruiting a protégé Robby Keene, whom Daniel has also become a father figure to.

3 Stayed The Same: Friendly And Easy-Going Person

Of course, Daniel continues to be one of the friendliest and most easy-going characters in the series. Regardless, Daniel has always been about making friends in the series like Mr. Miyagi and Kumiko, and his personality reflects on him as a person.

During the start of the series, Daniel was initially friendly with Johnny as he had already forgiven him during their teenage years. He even fixed his car with no charge, showing the amicable side of Daniel. Though this friendly relationship was short-lived, it does reflect on Daniel as someone who has a friendly and easy-going personality.

2 Changed After Karate Kid: Keeping Up With the Tech World & Pop Culture

Unlike some of his peers, Daniel is learning to adapt to technological advancements and even loves the current pop culture. This is coming from the fact that Daniel lived through the 80s, which was an era filled with science fiction trends and the rise of classic rock music.

Regardless, Daniel is one of those Gen Xer parents who enjoy the latest gadgets in the world that only make their lives so much easier. He even expresses his love for Game of Thrones throughout the show and occasionally makes pop culture references. He even uses his knowledge to show around the apps to Johnny during their brief friendly moments in the series.

If there is one thing that makes Daniel a pretty admirable character, it is his willingness to stand up to bullies. This was first evident when he was defending Ali Mills against Johnny Lawrence.

Similarly, Daniel continues to hold the idea of using karate as a way to fight against bullies when needed. Of course, this would only hold as long as it is used for defense. This occurred at the clubhouse scene when Robby was vulnerable against his former crew. Daniel came just in time to take down the bullies and save Robby.
