Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria, says the show is likely to be filmed in 2021, with episodes releasing sometime this year. Like many projects in 2020, production on Euphoria season 2 was delayed. The show was originally set to begin filming in March 2020 when everything shut down. The first season of the HBO show aired in the summer of 2019 and it looks like a similar trajectory was planned for the show’s second season.
With filming delayed, though, it has remained an open question as to when the Zendaya-led show will return. Hot off of her historic Emmy win for the series, Zendaya and Levinson worked on two special episodes for the series to air in between the seasons, the first of which was centered around Zendaya’s character, Rue. The second, which premiered in January, followed Rue’s love interest, Jules, played by newcomer Hunter Schafer. Both episodes were filmed during the pandemic.
Now, Levinson has opened up about when the show could return to screens. Levinson spoke to Indiewire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast about the second season of the show. He says that he hopes the show will begin production in March 2021, a year after production was originally shut down. Levinson says he hopes “to release episodes this year” but remains hesitant as to whether or not this is possible.
The return of Euphoria is highly anticipated, especially after the two bubble episodes that Levinson produced during the pandemic. The show’s first season ended on quite a depressing note, with Rue relapsing after her plans to run away with Jules fell through. The special episodes explore the aftermath of that fallout, but some have said that they fail to capture the magic of the show’s first season. To be fair, it’s hard to do so when confined by pandemic related protocols.
The show’s controversial first season followed the lives of the series’ teenagers as they navigated high school life. That entails a lot of partying and gathering together, something that is hard to do in the era of COVID. Still, more and more productions have been able to navigate pandemic-related protocols while still filming normally and that’s something Levinson sounds interested in at least attempting. His hesitancy, though, is worrying, and considering the fact that we’re still in the midst of a deadly surge in cases, there’s no telling when Euphoria season 2 could go into production.
