Cobra Kai Needs to Bring In Julie Pierce As a Mentor

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 3 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.

In its three seasons, Cobra Kai has given fans something more than just male-driven, testosterone-fueled rivalries with Miyagi-Do’s Sam LaRusso (Mary Mouser) and Cobra Kai’s Tory (Peyton List) now joining center stage. However, as Daniel and Johnny rekindled their rivalry as older gents, and with the likes of Kreese coming back, not to mention the feuds between Miguel, Robby, Hawk and Demetri, it’s still just a lot of guys venting and fighting.

As a result, it’s a breath of fresh air to have young women playing a key role in the narrative and on the mat. With that said, following the end of Season 3, it’s imperative that Hilary Swank’s Julie Pierce returns to the fold as a teacher to even the field out a bit more in terms of leadership and someone the young women can look up to.

Julie was trained by Miyagi in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, and it has been confirmed as a chapter of the franchise that’s in-canon. This easily opens the door for her to come to Reseda and help out, which is needed especially for Sam. Sure, Sam’s mom, Amanda, is there to lean on, but she just doesn’t relate in terms of being a warrior, and there are things that don’t resonate with Sam and her parents.

It would be great to have her connect with another female fighting perspective because let’s face it, fans have seen enough of Daniel, Johnny, Kreese and now, Chozen, mentoring fighters. Julie fits perfectly because she’s badass and can bring a new dimension based on what Miyagi taught her. In addition, with Daniel as his “son,” Julie adding that “daughter” angle to things feels like it’ll bookend Miyagi’s legacy perfectly. With Johnny’s students joining Daniel’s dojo, fans also expect more females to sign up, and they’re better off with a woman in the mix as well, as opposed to two guys who barely understand women, something Ali also pointed out upon her return. Seeing as Sam, Robby, Miguel and Tory are in one nasty love quadrangle, a woman’s touch really is needed, especially for the girls.

Julie’s presence would also help Tory if she ever seeks redemption. Kreese is turning her into a weapon, but Julie can relate to her tough upbringing and tempt her back from the darkness. What’s interesting is Julie might even know Kreese better than he thinks because her nemesis was Michael Ironside’s Colonel Paul Dugan — someone even more brutal than Kreese.

In that sense, she could actually be the trump card in a way Daniel and Johnny never could because she took down Dugan’s Alpha Elite squad, a military-esque team that makes Kreese’s old students look like chumps. Julie even got them to abandon Dugan’s principles, so it’s not just about adding that feminist leader to the dojo, but someone who understands they’re facing monsters, not men, when the All-Valley tournament starts next season.
