Cobra Kai Why Johnny & Daniel Teaming Up In Season 4 Is Perfect

Cobra Kai season 3 ends with an exciting promise – a team-up between Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso to take down John Kreese in season 4. Johnny and Daniel have been rivals since the first Karate Kid, and their feud has caused most of the core conflict in Cobra Kai so far. However, after a reunion with Ali Mills, the two finally acknowledged their similarities and mutual blame for their past. The two sensei combining dojos is the best way to stop Kreese, and it also fits perfectly with the show’s overall story.

Cobra Kai is largely a show about rivalry and redemption. Johnny embodies these ideas as the central character, realizing over the course of the series that his past doesn’t define him, and that he can overcome the toxic philosophy he was taught as a kid. While it rarely gets so thematically complex, Cobra Kai is also a show about dualities. The rivalry between Johnny and Daniel exists because both men stubbornly believe that their way is the only right way, when in reality there is merit to each of their perspectives.

It’s for these reasons that Kreese can only be defeated – both literally and thematically – by a team-up between Johnny and Daniel. Kreese represents the opposite of openness, the antithesis of change. The backstory he gets in season 3 adds sympathy to his character at first, but it also drives home how foundationally brutalized his life philosophy he has become. Johnny trusted Kreese at first, only to realize too late how resistant his old sensei was to change. The foil to Kreese’s abusive mentality is not Miyagi-Do’s penchant for self-defense, or Johnny’s new mantra of being a badass without being cruel. The foil to Kreese is an acceptance of multiple “right ways’ of doing things, and that’s what will ultimately defeat him.

In a practical sense, combining the teachings of Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s new dojo Eagle Fang Karate is the best way to prepare Miguel, Sam, and the rest of the students for victory at the next All-Valley Tournament. The brutality that Tory and Robby will likely channel can best be countered by a fusion style, adding Johnny’s “strike first” mindset with Daniel’s core tenets of self-defense. After being trained in both techniques, the students will be able to both deflect the Cobra Kai style and fight fire with fire of their own.

In a narrative sense, the team-up between Daniel and Johnny is even more significant. It pays respect to both sides of the original Karate Kid story, and it unites the best of both worlds under one banner. The message of Cobra Kai through season 3 is clear – different beliefs can coexist, but there are also some that are simply abusive and toxic. Daniel and Johnny can finally embody Mr. Miyagi’s teachings of balance in all things by joining forces against Kreese in Cobra Kai season 4’s dojo war.
